CAMPAIGN FOR
OWNERS
LPOC RECEPTION AT THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT – 5TH NOV 2019 HERITAGE MINISTER AND CRAIG MACKINLAY MEET OWNERS AT PARLIAMENT
As Parliament came to a close there was an opportunity to show the Club’s appreciation to for APPG’s work since the last election. Group chair, Craig Mackinlay MP, kindly hosted a reception for the Club on the House of Commons terrace and almost 200 members travelled from across the country to attend.
The Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, Helen Whatley, spoke at the event and the Club were extremely happy to see her publicly supporting listed building owners. The minister was warmly welcomed and stayed long enough to meet several Club members and hear about their challenges.
Craig Mackinlay also spoke and spent much of the evening fielding questions from members, aided by the Club’s conservation expert Peter Bell. There was a lively discussion about the future of listed buildings and the changes that owners would like to see both the Club and the APPG campaign for.
It is always heartening to see that our members are so politically engaged and actively fighting for change. It shows just how important our historic buildings really are, and the strength of feeling about big issues like VAT and the planning process. Many attendees had lived in a listed building for decades and know first hand how much harder ownership has become in the past few years.
‘‘ Dear LPOC,
My wife and I would like to thank you for the wonderful visit to the House of Commons. It was a splendid afternoon and both the tea and the discussion was first class.
We will now be paying much more attention to how planning and conservation services are controlled, as well as campaigning for legislation to improve insulation and energy efficiency for listed properties.
Yours, David and Ruth H, Gloucestershire
APPG chair Craig Mackinlay MP meets Club members ‘‘ Dear LPOC,
Thank you and Craig Mackinlay for arranging the parliamentary event. I was pleased and impressed to see that Craig was so in command of the subject matter.
I felt his description of George Osborne’s removal of VAT as “spiteful” was very accurate. I’m sure if people knew that they could zero rate any work it would encourage them to apply and ensure our built heritage is properly maintained!
Thanks again, Sarah W, London.
