CAMPAIGN FOR
IS THE PLANNING SYSTEM
FIT FOR PURPOSE? At Westminster several members voiced frustration at how opaque the planning process can be to normal owners. To help address this, we have asked Peter Bell to write a primer on the planning process for next issue to explain exactly how the system works. It will be a must read for owners interested in our campaign and help to explain why we need planning reforms.
Listed building owners are spread across the whole UK and all too often this makes us easy to ignore. Coming together for an evening showed that our campaign is made up of real people, who are suffering real challenges. It was an amazing opportunity to find out how owners really feel, and to put those thoughts directly to MPs.
A lot of issues were covered during the event, including VAT, planning and energy efficiency, with every owner keen to discuss how these issues had impacted them directly. There was a particularly lively debate about members’ struggles with local planning authorities, with owners around the room strongly supporting the need for reform.
The Westminster reception was a stirring success with many members writing in to express their appreciation both to the Club and our host. Craig Mackinlay again showed his dedication and expertise on the issue, and the Club would like to publicly thank him for hosting the event.
The Club will continue to work within Parliament over the coming years and will keep creating these opportunities for members to meet with their representatives.
OWNERS
Culture minister, Helen Whatley discusses owners’ challenges ‘‘ Heritage minister addresses Club members ‘‘ Club members on the Westminster Terrace
Dear LPOC, Thank you for hosting your event on Tuesday 5th.
The action taken by the Campaign for Owners to highlight the nonsensical, unhelpful and frankly unprofessional condition of listed building services is truly important. This whole system is negative for all and demoralising for those of us who legitimately care for, restore and live in old buildings.
Thank you again for providing us with a voice in Parliament.
Yours sincerely, Melanie L, Devon
Craig Mackinlay addresses members Dear LPOC,
Thank you for taking the time to understand our problems. Our situation is entering its third year to create the dream home we had envisioned, and none of us are getting any younger! I feel the planning process is taking away our golden years that we hoped to spend enjoying our home.
Best regards, Steve C, Lincolnshire
