Detail of a circa 1590- 1620 window from Cade House, Riverhead, Kent
This two-light oak- framed window with ‘cavetto’ and ‘ovolo’ mouldings, central wrought-iron bar to glazed light and early cylinder glass leaded-light glazing, was uncovered by builders when undertaking alterations at Cade House in 2004. The window had been cut-down from a larger window and re-used,
possibly in the 18th century, and soon after was sealed-up. The window was in fact recycled from the late 16th/early-17th century work at the house, when it was updated in the circa late-18th century.
Note the late 16th/ early-17th century cylinder glass and thin lead cames. This window was kindly donated by the owners of the house
Detail of facade of The George Hotel, High Street, Rye, East Sussex
This view was taken in 1987. It shows a distinctive early 18th- century sash window with a segmental head and typically wide glazing-bars, circa 1715- 20. This window was probably re-sited during the circa 1810-1818 reconstruction of the hotel. During this period the window openings were enlarged. Note the fine glazing-bars typical of the late Georgian/ Regency period.
This early 18th- century window was
Over the last 30 years, with the increasing loss of historic windows owing to unsympathetic replacements, the importance of a scholarly chronological record illustrating this important and now fast disappearing architectural detail has become imperative.
In 2015 a new charity was established to safeguard the future of the Brooking and I duly donated the entire archive to the charity. As an architectural historian I maintain a teaching gallery and window archive on loan from the charity at Cranleigh, Surrey, for my own research and future publications where I also run a series of continuing professional development (CPD) courses.

an important survival, imparting much information about the early 18th-century facade that existed prior to the rebuilding. On a recent visit this month, I was saddened to note that these original early 18th-century sashes had been replaced with modern sashes, complete with inappropriate sash- horns. Not only has an important part of this building’s historic detail been lost, but no attempt was made to replicate the sashes correctly
