implemented, it took time for citizens to get used to the change. But many have now embraced it. “I think that goes to the general, sometimes people are a little afraid of change,”said Brennan.“You always hear the buzzwords about envi- ronmental stewardship and climate change — and they’re huge issues, they’re important issues — but people also want to under- stand how it affects them personally. That’s where a municipality has a real push to be able to show people this change affects you, but it’s for good. I think that’s the hurdle that most municipalities have to get over. We did experience a little bit of pushback, especially with the three carts. We had a system for many, many years — the big-bin sys- tem — that people were just so used to, it was so easy.We could see how it would work, but we were working with it every day.To change it over to our residents, it affects their lives, and I think that’s where people get a little bit nervous about change. That happens with all levels of government when we see change — we’ve seen a change in the energy industry. I can certainly imagine how difficult it is for peo- ple to get used to change. But it happens, and once they realize how

efficient — and sometimes better — it is for their lives, we’ve never had a problem with people getting really invested into problems after new changes like that.” Compost was one of the

aspects of the system that ini- tially gave most people pause, but the diversion of this aspect has paid off for the town, according to Brennan. “Especially the compost. We

were one of the first municipalities in southern Alberta to do that, so that was an added fear on top of that. What we really wanted to do was make it as simple as possible so you don’t need to sort your recy- clables, you can throw all your organics in and don’t worry about it. Basically, it’s the bin system, it just separates it into three.”
