Suffield Solar project seeing progress

of Suffield in Cypress County. It will take up about 202 acres of land, centered at a quarter section, and will produce 22 megawatts of solar power over 90,000 panels. “In September, construction activities ramped up, including the

construction of a perimeter fence and most of the roads for the facility,”said Ryan Tourigny, director of business development for Canadian Solar projects. “Overall we are very enthusiastic about the project and happy

it’s reached the construction phase.” There were a couple of important steps that came through in

order for Canadian Solar to enter the construction phase. “We’ve been working the project for some time now and the

key for us was that we were looking to deploy bifacial solar mod- ule technology.A technology that Canadian Solar and others manufacture,”he said. “We received some funding support to deploy the technology

ack in September, the C&B Alberta (CBA) Solar Development ULC saw some movement on its Suffield Solar Farm. The project is 10 kilometres northwest of the Hamlet

for the first time in Canada from Natural Resources Canada, and that was really helpful for us,because before we can fully demon- strate a product in a market like Canada, lots of steps are involved. And with that help from Natural Resources Canada,we were able to show the technology, bring some attention to the region.” Bifacial solar module technology is where solar power is pro-

duced on both sides of the panel. An optic agreement was made between Suffield Solar and

Direct Energy Business, which signed a long-term agreement to purchase all electrical output and its capacity from the Suffield facility. Tourigny says they have yet to reach the full peak labour force

on site and anticipates that will happen early in the new year. “We anticipate a peak workforce on site of around 250,”he said. Panel installation will begin in early 2020. The facility is expected to be online in June 2020. CBA originally got power plant approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission in February 2017 and since then, minor amendments have been made to the project plan, including equipment changes and schedule update.

Any brand of pivot. One connected network.

Get ready to experience complete control. Others talk about it, but they just don’t have it. We do, and we deliver complete irrigation control – no matter the brand of pivot or the control panel that resides with that pivot. The new Valley® ICONX smart panel eliminates the frustration of running multiple brands of pivots and juggling varying degrees of technology.

Take the next step and bring your existing control panels into one manageable network.
