the percentage they contribute overall. The oil sands contribute the largest amount at 26 per cent, followed
by electricity/heat generation (18 per cent), oil/gas/mining (17 per cent), transportation (15 per cent), agriculture (seven per cent), residen- tial/commercial (six per cent), manufacturing/construction (six per cent), industrial (four per cent) and waste (one per cent). In 2013, Alberta’s total emissions were estimated at 267 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents. In terms of human factors, depletion of the ozone layer, increased
concentrations of green-house gases (primarily from burning fossil fuels) and using forests and wetlands for agricultural, residential and industrial uses are the biggest. Moving forward with the UCP government, the recently announced 2019 budget vows to continue exploring climate change and reducing Alberta emissions. Within the budget, it states the provincial government will be ‘imple- menting the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) to help reduce emissions by focusing on large industrial emitters.’ From the TIER fund, the UCP government will be developing and implementing new technologies for oil sands extraction, research and investment to reduce emissions. They will also be looking to create a climate strategy that balances between environmental protection and economic growth.
