lar power to M.D.
Change Action Centre (MCCAC).This funding was allocated in early 2019 and the final contribution has been sent to the M.D. of Taber after our successful mid-term report,”continued Hirsche.“Initially the program funding was announced at $10 million to fund one or more
projects. The M.D. of Taber’s Expression of Interest was accepted in September and we received our invitation for a final proposal due January
2020.At this time, participants were also informed that upon reviews of Expressions of Interest, maximum Program funding had been reduced to a maximum of $7 million for any individual project. More than any reduction in grant funding, our project has been affected by uncertainty surrounding the priorities of the new gov-
ernment. This uncertainty at a time when global oil, gas and electrici- ty markets are rapidly changing, combined with fiscal review and possible changes in the scope and direction of Alberta’s Ministerial Agencies, has complicated the commercialization of our overall pro- gram.”
With the financial side of things still not formed completely, con-
struction dates have also hit a bit of a snag due to the questions around the cost.
While they had hoped to have construction begin later this year, that has been pushed back to early next year. “We were planning to start construction on the first pilot site in the
third quarter of 2019. Unfortunately,we have experienced delays waiting for the cost estimate to connect the solar array to the electri- cal grid and finalizing some details related to regulatory approvals. We hope these issues will be resolved soon and we can begin con- struction in early 2020.We expect the pilot will be generating elec- tricity three months after construction starts,”explained Hirsche. While it may be looked at as a minor set back for the group, the
necessity to have the pilot project work as intended is huge for everyone involved. “The initial pilot is very significant to the overall success of our
project. The final costs compared to revenue generated from elec- tricity sales will confirm the feasibility of the business
plan.More importantly, the initial pilot will provide a concrete example that can be used as a template to resolve the regulatory uncertainty sur- rounding the use of abandoned oil and gas infrastructure for renew- able energy development. Reducing this uncertainty will provide a clear path for commercialization that will benefit landowners, munic- ipalities, the oil and gas industry, renewable energy developers, and the province,”added Hirsche.“The MCCAC/ M.D. of Taber RenuWell project has attracted the attention of several provincial agencies during the course of our stakeholder consultations and we have received very positive feedback to our project proposals. We will be presenting the results of these consultations and seeking additional public input at the M.D. of Taber/RenuWell meeting.”
