community,” said Firth. “We were right on the border of Alaska where we were picking things up. It is so unique up there, there are so many gla- ciers around Stewart. There were green, lush mountains and waterfalls after waterfalls coming down through the mountains. There were places that looked like you were right in the middle of the set of Lord of the Rings.” Firth made one of the final trips up himself to ensure any loose ends

the first boat load taking about five weeks to complete, with 23 loads going from Stewart to Edmonton. Further compounding the logistics was it wasn’t like you can just park these long and wide loads anywhere for a break. Firth has years upon years of over-dimensional experience in logistics, in which he said the project was by far the most challenging, yet rewarding project he has taken on personally. “It has to be off the highway. Some of these units we were hauling

were extremely long. When you are upwards of 140 to 150 feet long bumper to bumper, even just finding fuel along the way is a challenge, wondering if you can get into a fuel station with this thing,” said Firth. “And then there are things like you have to stay under 4.88 metres high in B.C. or else you need to be escorted by a power company and most escorts are done in the evening.” Classic Hot Shot took about three-and-a-half weeks off before the sec- ond boat came which featured another 36 loads starting in early July and lasted until Cornfest weekend in late August. While a grueling job from start to finish, it allowed Classic Hot Shot to

travel roads they had never done before and discover some most breath-taking scenery, which included a portion of Alaska. “That Stewart higher area is one of the most rich mineral areas with sil- ver and iron ore. It’s incredible. There’s a lot going on in such a small

were tied up and permits and logistics were taken care of. “The pictures the guys were posting were just breathtaking. Even though we were trucking what we were always trucking, it was unique in that it was an area we had never done before,” said Firth. “For some of the guys, it was the first time they had ever driven through the moun- tains in some very remote areas, with long stretches of no cell service. The experience was great for the guys and it opened up new avenues.” While Firth explored all these new lands on business, he added the

beauty has made him want to revisit the various areas with his family to spend some quality time with each other. “There were so many beautiful communities along the way. I have

traveled to a lot of places in Canada in northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Jasper etc., but not those parts of B.C.,” said Firth. “I’ve shown (my wife) all the pictures and now it’s on our bucket list. It’s places we can stop and actually explore as opposed to just driving through. You see all this cool stuff, but you don’t get an actual chance to stop for a half day (while working). I never ever would have thought of traveling through there before, and now that I’ve seen it, I want to share it with my family and spend a lot of time there.” Firth added the B.C. haul took every bit of manpower Classic Hot Shot had while also maintaining its regular customers. “You also want to keep your bread-and-butter customers happy, but

still branching out to explore new opportunities in a recession,” said Firth. “We’ve been one of the lucky companies who has kept going. We’ve had our challenges, but we’ve kept going.”
