RenuWell still on track to provide so

BY COLE PARKINSON insight magazine

Work for RenuWell to place small-scale solar

projects on abandoned oil well lease sites is con- tinuing to make headway. After being brought forward to Municipal District of Taber council earlier this year, the RenuWell team is reporting good reaction from the public so far. “We received a very positive response from all stakeholders during our initial public consultation sessions and we will be reporting on this feedback in our meetings.Currently,we are in the process of evaluating the costs and benefits of various project ownership options and the overall economic value of re-purposing inactive leases to solar within the M.D. of Taber,”said Keith Hirsche from RenuWell. RenuWell is hoping to utilize abandoned and

inactive oil and gas infrastructure as a foundation for building renewable energy projects, with the

pilot project located six kilometres southwest of Taber on a 2.7-acre piece of land. They will have a presentation for the M.D. council during their November meeting and a stakeholder consultation at the Heritage Inn on the same day. They will be also be holding a public consultation with the Alberta Utility Commission at the Heritage

Inn. “The Alberta Utilities Commission has also agreed to host a public

consultation meeting in Taber to engage with landowners, irrigation farmers, the oil and gas industry and renewable energy developers on the new Small Scale Generation and Community Generation regulations. This will be an important meeting that will help shape these rules in a practical way and the results will impact how these stakeholders can engage with future opportunities,” stated Hirsche. Right now, funding isn’t as concrete as they had hoped consid- ering the shift of the provincial government this spring. “The current M.D. of Taber/RenuWell Community Generation Capacity Building Project is funded by the Municipal Climate
