WHAT DOES YOUR ORGANISATION DO? We facilitate learning events for our clients. Clients like our non- directive, discussion based approach. Our specialisms are Train the Trainer, Management & Leadership skills. We embrace digital learning, and have our own online level 5 qualification courses for Trainers and Coaches. We also have our own Learning Management System, which is cost effective for companies who want induction documents, videos and their own courses online.

HOW DID IT ALL START? I worked as HR Manager (stores) for Texas Homecare, the DIY chain, and an appraisal question was ‘Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?’. I didn’t see myself in HR for sure, so I was brave and told my manager that! She was passionate about HR, and I expected the worst, but instead she said she thought I was more suited to training. So I started life as a Texas Tom (customer care) trainer!

WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? Being happy and content in each moment. Living a mindful life and sharing that with others in my community.

WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU MOST IN YOUR JOB? Learners who sabotage their opportunity to be the best they can be. I’m passionate about learning and embrace every opportunity to learn. When companies invest in their people, and an individual can’t see the gift they’ve been offered. I find that a missed opportunity.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST RISK YOU’VE EVER TAKEN – AND DID IT WORK OUT? Scripting, and producing our first drama-based training films in 2010 – it opened up a new avenue for us of selling online through video streaming. This led to us designing our own elearning courses – our strategy is to move all our courses online.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT? Follow your desire and passion, but watch a few episodes of Dragon’s Den. Have a business plan, do market research, and do everything yourself. I get told I need lots of services that actually we have found we do better ourselves!

WHICH BUSINESS PERSON DO YOU MOST ADMIRE? I don’t. I think the business world is lacking role models of any sort. The person I most admire is Thich Nhat Hanh, mindfulness practitioner.

WHAT EXCITING PROJECT IS YOUR ORGANISATION WORKING ON? Developing mindfulness programmes for clients. Since I qualified as a Mindfulness for Life facilitator, I have designed ½ day and one day retreats, facilitated taster sessions as part of Wellbeing week, and delivered an eight-week programme (2.5 hour session once a week for eight weeks).

WHAT MADE YOU JOIN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE CHAMBER AND HOW ARE YOU MAKING USE OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP? My co-Director, Adrian Green, set up the training offering at Northamptonshire Chamber in 1994, when he started The Development Company. We’ve been a member for 25 years. The advice the International Trade department gives us for selling our readymade courses and elearning overseas is invaluable.
