@CanterburyIndex BUSINESS NEWS Local schemes set to Go Green Go Wild
Eleven community groups in Maidstone have been awarded a £250 grant each to connect with the wildlife and nature on their doorstep and improve their areas. The grants are part of the Maidstone Borough Council “Go Green Go Wild” initiative, which aims to improve biodiversity across the borough. Formally constituted groups with an existing affi liation with a park, open space or community garden in the borough could apply, and funding was considered for wildlife projects, tree planting, biodiversity improvements, clean-up projects, materials, equipment and
tools and seeds, bulbs and plants. The 11 groups include: Valley Conservation Society, Cave Hill Tovil; Hayle Park Nature Reserve; Vinters Valley Park Trust, Weavering, Grove Green; Hollingbourne Meadows (pictured); Friends of South Park; Allington Millennium Trust, Allington; Marden in Bloom; North Loose Residents Association; Oakwood Park Grammar School; Friends Of Bell Lane, Staplehurst; and West Farleigh in Bloom. The Go Green Go Wild scheme is aimed at encouraging people to look after the nature on their doorstep.

10th anniversary celebrations for local Bereavement Group
The Bereavement Group, established by Crowborough’s independent funeral director Tester & Jones, celebrated its 10th anniversary with an afternoon tea at Barnsgate Manor, which was attended by Crowborough’s Mayor, Councillor Greg Rose, as well as more than 50 members of the group. Councillor Rose planted a red
maple tree Autumn Blaze in the grounds of Barnsgate Manor to mark the anniversary, while also unveiling a commemorative plaque. When Glenys Jones and co- founder Stephen Tester launched Tester & Jones in 2004, they wanted
families to know that the door was always open for them and that they could pop in after a funeral for a cup of tea and chat.
“Over time, we felt that we could be doing more to support our families,” said Glenys. “Ten years ago, along with the help of Sue Carswell, who is a trained counsellor, we launched our Bereavement Group.” In addition to the monthly meetings – of which there have been more than 120 over the past decade – members also get together for theatre trips and days out. • Visit
