prominence when he and his travelling companion were on a plant-hunting expedition and were kidnapped by guerrillas in the Colombian jungle. Three months into their ordeal they were told that they should prepare to die that night. Tom decided to spend his fi nal day on earth designing his dream garden and started planning a “World Garden” which would contain plants he had collected from across the globe, planted out in their respective countries of origin.
Fortunately Tom survived the kidnap ordeal and on his return after nine months in captivity he made his dream design a reality at his home, Lullingstone Castle here in Kent. The Gardens and Guerillas Lunch will take place on Monday 25th November. CHARITY OF THE MONTH Heart of Kent Hospice
Heart of Kent Hospice is a local charity providing expert advice, support and guidance to patients, their carers and families. Last year we cared for more than 1,500 people in their own homes, in the community, and in the Hospice. Compassion, care and support for people living with a terminal illness is at the heart of what we do. Our care is free thanks to the enormous
generosity of our supporters who raise £4 million of the £5 million it costs to provide our services each year. As our communities
continue to grow and develop we know that demand for our expert services will rise. We provide our outstanding support across Maidstone, Tonbridge & Malling, Aylesford and surrounding villages. In June of this year we were delighted
to be awarded Kent Care Charity of the Year in recognition of the commitment of our specialist colleagues and army of volunteers who do everything they can to help our patients achieve the best quality of life and make lasting memories. There are many different ways to
support our work and raise awareness of Heart of Kent Hospice. From volunteering, taking part or organising a fundraising event or simply letting people know we are here – your support will make a very real difference to us.
