EDUCATION 055

Education for all PET POWER!

Schools are invited to sign up for a free education programme called PetWise School Award. It’s fully recognised that caring for a pet can bring huge benefi ts to children and their families – access to a pet can lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health, lower stress levels and lead to reduced likelihood of asthma and allergic rhinitis in children. The PDSA, a leading veterinary charity, has launched the PetWise School Award, which comprises four easy-to-follow levels and each one has full resources for teachers. The National Curriculum-linked sessions come with their own lesson plans plus a PowerPoint presentation and worksheets. • To sign up online, visit pdsa.org.uk/ petwise-schools

The United Nations’ education agency (UNESCO) has warned that the promises made by world leaders to ensure that children across the globe will have access to both primary and secondary education by 2030 are unlikely to be met. The aim is to get an increasing number of children and young people into education as a matter of course, with all children being enabled within 11 years from now. But since the fi nancial crash of 2008, the progress has slowed. Factors including the impact of war and displacement, a shortage of trained teachers and population growth have all contributed to the lack of progress, in addition to cuts to foreign aid. This is not to say that the outlook hasn’t improved for some. Countries such as Ethiopia, Nepal and Afghanistan have moved forward considerably, but it seems the deadline won’t be reached unless leaders around the world give education higher priority. There are currently said to be 131 million girls worldwide who

are denied access to schooling – around double the number of boys – while around 50% of children with disabilities throughout the developing world are also denied access to schooling.
