Music of Edward Lear

Edward Lear is best known as a nonsense poet, the author of The Owl and the Pussycat and The Jumblies, but was also a gifted and prolifi c painter who taught Queen Victoria to draw, a naturalist, whose detailed illustrations of new species were consulted by Charles Darwin, and a composer who published 12 settings of his friend Alfred Tennyson’s poems. Writer and

academic Dr Sara Lodge at University

of St Andrews, conducted the fi rst study to consider Edward Lear’s works, unearthing a trove of music not widely known. She has now curated these works into a concert – and Edward Lear’s music is to be brought back to life on Sunday 13th October, in a special one-off evening concert in the Great Hall at Ightham Mote, near Sevenoaks. Ightham Mote is particularly fitting as a venue, with Edward Lear having enjoyed spending time staying in the

house. The concert will be performed by acclaimed pianist and broadcaster

David Owen Norris and

rising star operatic baritone Edward Robinson and is followed by a two- course meal in the Mote Café. • Tickets are priced at £42 per person. To book call 0344 249 1895 or visit nationaltrust.org.uk/Ightham-mote

Trick or treat tips If you’re planning to take little ones trick or treating this Halloween, be aware of some basic safety guidelines to make the experience as fun as possible for everyone involved:

Always accompany young trick and

treaters and never let them go out alone. Make sure costumes and shoes are comfortable, warm and not dragging on the ground, to avoid tripping over. Wear something refl ective or add

fl ashing lights to costumes to help drivers see you in the dark. Ensure masks are breathable and vision is not impaired.

Do not accept homemade treats from strangers. Don’t go near candles. Avoid unlit houses.

Keep track of time and hold back some of the sweets – bedtime will be more manageable without a major sugar rush!
