SPORT 051

For The Record

“I got into athletics, and in particular running, after a football career of almost 20 years. I decided when I retired from playing football that I still needed something to keep me fi t and active and running seemed like a good option,” says Elise Rendall who, by day, works for Kent Sport as its physical activity manager. “I found that by joining a local club it meant I could run with others and I’ve made lots of friends through running.

Compared to some other sports or gym memberships, running isn’t expensive. There are also so many opportunities at clubs no matter what distance you want to focus on from 100m to marathons, and also including track, fi eld, road running and cross-country.” Earlier this year Elise completed the London Marathon in an impressive time of three hours and 26 minutes and, in the process, picked up a Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon in classic Brownie uniform!

Helping Hands Athletics is a sport that’s grown in both participation numbers and success since the London Olympics of 2012 and that growth is, in no small part, down to the army of volunteers who – as in other sports – give so generously of their time. The Kent County Athletic Association (KCAA) says volunteers provide the foundations for an athlete’s journey and are rooted within club networks. They support and encourage individuals, and, for many athletes, they simply wouldn’t be able to compete without the help of volunteers. • If you’re interested, email volunteers@kcaa.org.uk

Park Life

Every Saturday morning, up and down the country, thousands of people now take part in 5km parkruns. In fact since it was launched some 2.1 million runners have taken part in 148,000 events at 651 locations, notching up around 30 million runs between them and – continuing the statistics – running for the equivalent of 1,668 years.

• Parkruns (parkrun.org.uk) are free but advance registration is required.
