BUSINESS REPORT
ADAPTING FOR THE FUTURE WITH ACS
The team at ACS has been inspiring business across Northampton and beyond for over 30 years. As workplace behaviour evolves and adapts to the challenges of the future; so too does ACS. After nearly three decades at the helm of the UK’s leading independent
total office solutions provider, joint managing director John Harley (pictured) has stepped into his new role as chairman and handed over the reins to Jon Thorpe, who has been working closely with John since its inception. John’s dedication to the business community and insightful
approach to changes in technology has paved the way for a wealth of business leaders to follow in his footsteps. Michael Harley, workplace director, and Stephen Harley,
pre-sales director, are continuing their father’s legacy by taking Board positions. Joining them will be fellow ACS dream-team member, chief information and security officer Mark Andrews. With over 40 years ACS experience between them, there is
‘ACS HAS A
PARTICULAR DNA, IT’S NOT MY DNA THOUGH
… IT’S THE ENVIRONMENT’
no doubt that the business will flourish, continuing to embrace digital transformation. The executive team have been diligently working over the last year to
prepare the business for a smooth transition, given that interiors director, Gordon Howe, will also be stepping down at the end of the year. John said: “ACS has a particular DNA, it’s not my DNA though… it’s the
environment, it’s the people that create it and make it what it is. They will be what I miss most; the people, my extended family.”

KIERWSP CONTINUE TO IMPROVE ROADS
LASTING LEGACY OF WESTFIELD HEALTH
Founded on 3 July 1919, Westfield Health was initially created to support Sheffield’s four hospitals: The Royal, The Royal Infirmary, The Children’s and Jessops Hospital for Women, and it was originally known to most as The Sheffield Hospitals Council. Since then, Westfield Health has adapted to change and constantly
evolved to meet their customers’ ever-changing needs. From the ‘Penny in the Pound’ scheme devised by Fred Osborn in 1921, to the cutting edge health and wellbeing solutions that are helping people, communities and workplaces today to be healthier, Westfield Health continues to push boundaries and grow as a company. On 14 October 1965 they established the Sheffield and District Hospital’s Services Charitable Fund, donating annual funds for the purchase and repair of equipment in local hospitals. Since 1965 they are proud to have donated over £15m to local and national hospitals and charities that support people’s health and wellbeing. Graham Moore, chairman of Westfield Health, said: “We’re delighted
this year to be celebrating our 100th birthday, and to recognise the contribution our predecessors have made in helping people to live healthier and happier lives. They have left us with a tremendous legacy, that we are privileged to take on.”
12 inbusiness OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2019
When KierWSP won the Northamptonshire Transport and Highways contract in 2008, it promised to maintain and repair roads, while ensuring funds from central Government and other partners improved the journeys of all communities. Its objective was to develop a
strong relationship with Northamptonshire County Council to ensure the county meets ambitious plans for redevelopment, regeneration and investment. Having delivered link roads, like
Daventry and Corby, public realm schemes and key strategic highway improvements, KierWSP currently has two major schemes in construction on the A43 and in Kettering. The A43, between Northampton
and Kettering, suffers from congestion hotspots, delays and road safety issues due to vehicles trying to overtake. In line with the county council’s key strategy document, the Northamptonshire Arc, KierWSP are dualling the A43 from the A45 to the A14. Hanwood Park is east Kettering’s
new housing development, which over 20 years will deliver 5,500 homes, four primary schools, a secondary school, shops,
community buildings, employment centres, leisure facilities and parks. Despite the recent challenges
experienced by the council, KierWSP have focused on securing funding and ensuring investment in infrastructure continues. Successful pinch point funding for Cliftonville Corridor, Northampton, means work will start in the autumn, alongside plans to improve junctions across Northampton as part of the Northamptonshire Growth Management scheme.
