As one door opens, another is pulled out and put back to use. That’s the mantra of David Bell who volunteers with the Estates Team when he discovered a pair of wooden doors that had lain in store for years. ‘We knew the doors were there, but not what was on them,’ explains David. ‘They had been painted black at some point and then another volunteer mentioned there was an advert underneath. Carefully removing the black paint revealed the Hartford Shock Absorbers script. It’s great to see them out in the light of day and able to be used rather than left in storage.’ David has been a volunteer at Brooklands for two years and can be seen around the Museum on Thursdays with the Estates Team. After 43 years working for British Telecom, his hands-on skill comes in very useful with the multitude of jobs the team undertakes to ensure the smooth running and safety of the Museum. David says: ‘There are lots of great people at Brooklands and I went around the various departments when I first started to volunteer, but I’ve found where I’m happy with the Estates Team. I like to be involved with electrical, carpentry and restoration work. That’s what made the work on these doors so interesting for me.’ Now, David is working to recreate the correct hinges for the doors, which also have the TB Andre and Co Ltd name on them as this firm manufactured Hartford shock absorbers. With the doors now on display in the indoor picnic area, everyone can enjoy David’s efforts to restore these reminders of how Brooklands looked in the 1930s. David concludes: ‘We’ve managed to use some other old doors in other parts of the Museum, so it’s exciting to see this pair on display even if the are not in the perfect condition to be used as doors again. They add to the atmosphere and experience for visitors.’
