Air today, gone tomorrow Dear Brooklands,
I note the meeting recently for surviving participants of the 1969 Air Race was apparently un-advertised. Having been a low-level participant myself, I was unaware of it. My role was only to chauffeur two ‘runners’ from the GPO Tower to Battersea Heliport in my humble Ford Escort, which took me about 14 reasonably law-abiding minutes in normal traffic, despite suggestions of ignoring red lights. They then travelled on by a Capitol International Airways DC-8 passenger jet, which I still have the poster of from the event, and were leading their class until Sir Billy Butlin was given a significant time handicap, for reasons unknown to me, and won the Chartered Business Jet category. Sadly, I do not recall the names of my runners. Do you
have such records in your archives? If so, I would love to see the full results.
Kind regards, Andrew Armstrong
Editor’s note: If anyone can help, we can forward on information.
Time flies Sir,
I was sitting on the balcony of the Clubhouse at the Double Twelve meeting with programme in hand. I was comparing the handicap times for the sprint with the morning’s practice times shown on the Scoreboard when I realised that nobody would have been able to do this for nearly 80 years. Thanks BTM for making it happen.
