news Chairman’s message
Firstly, let me thank all of you who attended our AGM on the 17 July. There was an excellent turnout, with a lively and informative question and answer session with Tamalie Newbery and Committee Members. Two new Members were elected to the Committee. They are Debbie Crawt, a stalwart of the Outreach Team, and Harry Sherrard, familiar to many of you as a speaker in our Talks Programme. We welcome them both and look forward to their participation in the future. Although
this filled the outstanding vacancies on the Committee, we have additionally co-opted Mark Jarman onto the Committee for a year to assist us through the minefield of social media, which is increasingly important as we try to improve our communications with the broader membership.
My call for Members to step up and put themselves forward for election to the Committee clearly resonated with several of you. Partly due to the late arrival of the
Time to party This year’s Christmas lunch for Members will be held on Sunday 15 December in the Napier Room. The bar will open from midday and lunch will be served from 1pm. We’re very lucky to have Mel Rees as guest speaker this year, who will talk about ‘My family and other setbacks’. It’s a light-hearted look at life, parents who outlive you and children who won’t leave home or who, having done so, still cling on to your wallet. Mel has written the top-selling novel ‘The Club’ and four books under the pen-name of Anthony Mann, including ‘From Where I Sit’.
Always a very popular event in the Brooklands winter season, tickets cost £40 for adults and £20 for children under 12-years old. Make sure you book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Tickets are available from Sarah Dover on: 01932 857381 ext 226.

last edition of The Bulletin, expressions of interest were unfortunately received too late to be considered for this year’s AGM, as there is a deadline of 21 days before the AGM for applications to be submitted. The only way we could have allowed other candidates to stand would have been to reschedule the AGM. However, the response was very encouraging and bodes well for the future. You will read elsewhere in this edition (page 12) of the reciprocal agreement we have negotiated with the Friends of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, which came into effect on 1 September. It allows discounted entry subject to a few conditions and access to their programme of Events and Talks, and I hope you find this a useful addition to the benefits of membership. You will also read elsewhere (page 43) about the arrangements for our Annual Dinner on Friday 8 November. I am delighted to announce that our guest after- dinner speaker will be Amanda McLaren, daughter of Bruce and Brand Ambassador for McLaren Automotive. Our President, Damon Hill has confirmed his attendance and I hope there will be another ‘full house’ in the Napier Room. This is always a special occasion, so if you have not attended previously, please contact Angela Hume to order your tickets. During August, the Paddock has
been covered with artificial grass for the Brooklands Summer Fete. As I write, I am pleased the comments on this new innovation for the Museum have been so positive from Members, even though it has meant that those of you arriving in Classic or Pre-War cars have had to park elsewhere, but service has now returned to normal!
