Relived thrills crowds

Brooklands Relived certainly lived up to its new title with an improved spectacle for visitors and participants. An added attraction of a fly-in of four aircraft including a 1930 Puss Moth. The event also marked 80 years since the final Brooklands race weekend in that fateful summer of 1939. The display areas were divided into 1907 to 1919, the 1920s and the 1930s, so visitors were able to see how cars and motorcycle technology developed over the years. Three demonstration runs were organised. In the morning, vehicles completed circular laps on the Finishing Straight, with the BSA ‘Hells Bells’ on occasion adopting the ‘two out of three ain’t bad’ cornering technique. Runs up Test Hill followed and the action finished in the afternoon with sprint starts up the Finishing Straight and onto the Banking. All were non-competitive events,

although that memo didn’t get to some participants of the sprint starts. Afterwards the two fastest ever Brooklands cars, the Napier Railton and Bentley Hassan Special, completed runs and were parked together for a perfect photo opportunity. Elsewhere, there was time to wander

through the paddocks. Cheeky little Austin 7 roadsters mingled with elegant Lagondas and patrician Rolls-Royces. The Fire Engine maintained by the students from the Royal College of Science had a great brass bell that proved too tempting for small people to resist. Then there was the delightful reminder plaque on the handlebars of the Cotton motorcycle ‘Up for Down, Down for Up’.

Thanks, as always, must go to the marshals and officials for keeping everything in order and making sure everyone left with a smile on their face. Gareth Tarr and Steve Castle
