A View from the Clubhouse To quote our CEO and Museum Director Tamalie Newbery,

what a fantastic year it’s been for the museum so far. We have the prospect of an exciting action-packed autumn programme. 2020 also marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two and we will be working with the museum team to develop events to mark that fact. In addition, we are going to run a series of linked talks throughout the year for the first time based on the story of Vickers from its early days through to the 1970s. The programme will be delivered on a time line basis from a number of guest speakers.

On the subject of anniversaries, many of you will know that 2019 marks 100 years of Bentley Motors. At this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, our own Vice Chairman Julian Grimwade drove a magnificent 1925 Bentley 3-Litre Le Mans Team car up the Goodwood hill on all four days of the event in a very respectable time of 1min 33sec. On Sunday September 15, there will be a museum-wide private function. We will therefore be operating the Members’ Bar and Carvery in the Vickers Suite. The museum will remain open as usual.

In Memory of… Sadly, each issue we do lose some of our Members and we’d like

to pass the condolences of the Brooklands Members, Chairman and Committee to the families of the following who we have been notified have recently passed away.

Maurice Jones was a Life Member who sadly passed away in June. He was a former Friends and BTM committee member and volunteer who helped greatly in the early days of the Museum. Away from the Museum, he was a member of many clubs and a keen athletics enthusiast.

David Miller was a Life Member who sadly passed away in November last year. He was a British Aerospace apprentice at Brooklands before the site closed and a very early member of the Friends, first joining in 1991. He contributed to the 4D Theatre project, the Scoreboard re-creation and was proud to see his name on the plaque. Ian Hunter-Jaap was a member for the last five years and also of the MGF Register who are regular supporters. He would often be seen at Museum shows with that club in his grey MG TF.

Our Sunday Carvery has proved very popular with Club Members, but I admit that it is not popular with everyone. On event days, the Club can be very busy and the Carvery was partly introduced to offer a better service on those days. We recommend booking in advance, but some tables are always held for Members who arrive without a booking. If all those tables have been allocated, the Member should be informed when we expect a table to be available and invited to come back or enjoy a drink in the bar. To reserve a table reservation, please call: 01932 858 005; or

email: hospitality@brooklandsmuseum.com. Please do not leave a message with the BTM office or at visitor reception. The Members Bar is open to Club Members and their guests

on Thursday, Friday and Sunday lunchtimes. It is also open on event days and evening Talks. Please make sure you have your membership card with you on arrival. The bar is not available to members when there is a private function. Finally, can I remind all Club Members that you bring a maximum of two additional guests and up to three children into the Members Bar.

Classic Car Show

The main event of the Members year took place on July 21, the Classic Car Show and Jumble. There was an increase of 18% of members attending which was fantastic. Thank you for supporting the members by bringing your classic along or turning up to browse the 100 or so stalls and listen to our live bands while enjoying the summer sunshine. It was great that Sir Gerald and Lady Joyce Acher could be with us to present the trophies. A big thank you to them as well as all the BT volunteers and Museum team on the day. In fact, Lady Acher just missed out on an award for her Lancia in the pre-war section, coming fourth in the POO. I also really enjoyed the live music from Gentleman Tim & his Contenders and the New Mugs Ukulele group which all added to a great atmosphere on our special Members day.
