Friends Evenings A series of talks for Brooklands Members

and Friends of the National Motor Museum are planned for autumn and winter 2019. They start with Following in Grandad’s Flight Path, which is the story of the recreation of a 1915 Bristol Scout flown by Flt Sub Lt FDH ‘Bunnie’ Bremner during the First World War. There were no airworthy Bristol Scouts in the world, so research took six years and it wasn’t until 2007 that there was enough information to start the build. In 2016, they took the recreated Scout to the Greek island of Thassos to the exact spot where Bunnie flew. David flew her there on the exact same date, 100 years on.

The Scout has been painstakingly built by Bunnie’s grandson David with help from Theo Wilford. Bristol Scout 1264 will be on display at the talk on Saturday 21 September and the highlight is a start-up, followed by a screening of a documentary of the build and Q&A session with David Bremner. On 19 October, Bugatti authority Ivan Dutton gives a talk on A Life of Motoring Passion and Achievement. Following an apprenticeship in the motor trade in the 1960s, Ivan started his own business and also began racing on the British Production Saloon Car Championship. After hearing stories from his father about Brooklands, Ivan started to restore and race Bugattis, and this is a chance to hear of his exploits on and off the track. Gone Bush is a talk from Paul Catanach on 16 November about his trials and tribulations as a pilot in Australia’s Northern Territory. Dodging weather and wildlife, he survived to return to the UK where Paul now operate private business jets. Doctors Pat and Ness Garrod will give their Bearback: The World Overland talk on 6 December. The pair of adventurous GPs stashed their life into a backpack and set of on Bear, their motorcycle, and set off around the globe. Covering 100,000 miles and 64 countries, this is a story of escape, discovery and the longest ever journey by a couple on one motorcycle. To book tickets, contact Theresa

Browning on: 01590 614792; or send a cheque made payable to the National Motor Museum addressed to: Theresa, National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, SO24 7ZN. Tickets cost £7.50 for Members of Brooklands and the NMM and £10 for non-members.

Brooklands best kept secret The ‘noggin and natter’ held on the second Tuesday of every month from 7pm is one of

Brooklands’ best kept secrets. Run by Danny Byrne, initially at the invitation of past Museum Director Allan Winn 16 years ago, lots of one-make car clubs include it in their diaries. On these evenings, the Members’ Bar is open to everyone. The Paddock fills up with an eclectic range of cars, from vintage through to classics of all types and there is usually at least one Borgward and often a couple of Austin Atlantics. As well as the cars, Danny lays on other entertainments. In July there was a barbecue and in other months there are quizzes, competitions for period dress, ladies’ hats and gentlemen’s waistcoats, sometimes live music and guided tours of the Museum when volunteers are available. Every December there is a Christmas party and each month there is a raffle in which you stand a good chance of winning a decent bottle of wine. Whether you are a member or not, come along on the second Tuesday of the month – you can be sure of a warm welcome. The results of this year’s concours were first place to Ian Porter’s Austin Cooper, second was Dennis Burge’s Austin 10 Lichfield and third for Alan Greenwood’s Rover 95. The Alan Goddard Trophy for best MG went to Geoff Inman for his MG 1300. The concours judges were Martin Strick, John Wallis and the period dress award winner was Alan Wakefield. For more information about the Motoring Natter Evening please call Danny Byrne on: 01932 829814.

Chris Bass Brooklands and Beaulieu agreement

Brooklands has agreed a reciprocal arrangement with the National Motor Museum (NMM) at Beaulieu. The deal covers three main areas and offers members of both museums a range of benefits. For Brooklands Members, they will now be able to obtain entry to the NMM at the discounted Group rate on non-event days. The same applies for Friends of the NMM visiting Brooklands and the agreement came into effect from 1 September. Visits on event days will be charged at the advertised advance ticket rate, all tickets must be purchased on the day and discounts only apply to the Member named on the card. The second part of the agreement is for Brooklands and the NMM to exchange details of their talks programmes. Steve Clarke from Brookland and the NMM’s Theresa Browning will liaise on ticket availability. Thirdly, the NMM and Brooklands will exchange details of their respective events pro- grammes. Angela Hume and Theresa Browning will liaise on this. BTM Chairman Neil Bailey and Angela Hume were present at the meeting on 10 July.

The agreement was signed by Neil and Russell Bowman from Beaulieu and will be reviewed on an annual basis.
