Our area seems to have missed the heavy rain seen in other parts of the UK and water butts are now very near empty. Gardeners are hoping for some rain to ensure that their crops swell and ripen and that flowers bloom to their full potential. It may be that a summer such as this are becoming normal and we consider and modify the way we garden to minimise the effect of the dryer weather.

Water is a precious resource which we and our gardens need in order to thrive and we should be careful not to waste it. We should use stored water rather than from the mains. Water butts complete with stands and water interceptors for rainwater pipes are readily available from garden centres, supermarkets and online. They can also be available, at a discount, through some charities.

Stored water is good for greenhouses, pots, baskets and ericaceous plants as the water is usually slightly acid and does not lead to a build-up of lime in the growing medium. If possible, use the watering can rather than the hose because the water is then concentrated around the plant rather than the whole area and little is wasted. It is better to get the soil or growing medium to retain more water but not be waterlogged, as this

will lengthen the time before more water is needed. More plants die from overwatering, or drowning, than from drought. A garden with soil in good condition will last two or more weeks before any signs of drought become noticeable. Pots, tubs and houseplants dry out much quicker and can die in summer if not watered daily. Try not to have pot plants standing in a water filled tray. It is better to have some gravel in pot trays kept damp so the plant has a slightly humid atmosphere around it which helps the plant to reduce its transpiration. Pot plants are better if plunge-watered by immersing in a bucket of water until at least five minutes after air bubbles have ceased to rise from the compost. Remove the plant and leave to stand in an empty bucket until the surplus water has drained, then return to its plant tray.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 30th July, at The Swan Inn on Kirkgate at 7.15pm for 7.30pm. The discounted seed and wholesale bulb catalogues should be available for perusal. Come along and join us to talk about all things gardening.
