KEEPING YOU IN TOUCH - YOUR FREE MONTHLY NEWSPAPER DELIVERED DOOR-TO-DOOR FOR 32 YEARS BUSY - QUIET - BUSY

May and June were busy months for Cockermouth Soroptimists, with several attending the Cockermouth Conference on domestic violence and modern-day slavery and resolving on follow-up action. In June, a year of fundraising for Brain Tumour Research was rounded off with the presentation of a substantial cheque to the charity.

The summer months are quieter. Members enjoyed a geology walk and meal at St. Bees and have a Safari Supper to look forward to, where each course will be at a different member's house.

In September, it will be back to business with a planning meeting and then a talk about the Cumbria Foundation. In October, we will be hosting a Wellness Day, for which planning is well underway. More details to follow!

Cockermouth Soroptimists meet the first and the third Wednesday of the month at Veeva at 7.45pm. If you think you would like to join us, we would be delighted to see you on the 5th and or 19th of September. Don't come in August as we won't be there!

As well as a wide range of courses throughout the year, Higham is now offering occasional concerts given by musicians who are involved with courses - some leading musicians in their field. The standard of music is very high, and we feel it is an opportunity going begging not to offer some seats to the public. Our oak-floored lecture room seats up to 40 people creating an intimate setting and prime acoustic’s for live music.

We are lucky that the musicians themselves are often willing and able to offer their talents as part of the course, keeping costs down. However, the main reason is that having an appreciative audience for recitals is very much appreciated by musicians and is something to aim for. Our next evening event includes two legends in Jazz circles, Alan Barnes and Martin Shaw - a real treat!

“The course of true love never did run smooth” but the sparring antics of Shakespeare’s erstwhile lovers, Beatrice and Benedick, provide great hilarity for the other members of the household who plot to reunite them. Against this background, another romance is almost derailed by the machinations of a jealous Duke, until the local constabulary bumble upon his plans.
