DOES TELLING LIES PAY OFF IN BUSINESS?

At the time of writing, there is a 90% chance that Boris Johnson will be our Prime Minister in July. As he is someone who has been sacked from two separate high profile jobs for telling bare-faced lies, not to mention a £350m fib on the side of a bus to swing the Brexit vote, it’s clear that you can build a very successful career in politics by more or less ignoring the facts. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are two more examples of people who have built their careers on telling lies big and small.

It’s definitely possible to be very successful in business using these methods and most definitely, this does not exclude accountancy. One local accountant was very successful for many years until some things came unstuck, including having to admit that he had

CONSIDERED WORDS BY OAKTREE ACCOUNTANCY

‘fabricated’ all of the numbers in a Companies House submission. He is now an ex-accountant, though, so in the end it did not work out so well.

In many ways, the dodgiest accountants are the ones at the very top of the profession. These are the partners in the largest firms who audit the largest companies. Time and time again they just roll over and sign off dodgy numbers. So where the guy at the top of one of these companies is a career liar, surrounded by sycophants fabricating the accounts, the auditors will enable him – it’s almost always a man – to reap the rewards

before the whole thing comes crashing down.

Overall, having worked for a few of these sorts of people in my own career, in my view, lies will only get you so far. For long-term success in business, you need some basic level of personal integrity. “Your electronic payment is in the system” will only get you so far before your account is on stop and future supplies must be paid for in full up front.

In my view, attempting to build your career on lies is building a castle of sand. You can’t fool all of the people all of the time. I suspect our new Prime Minister is in for some hard lessons, fun times lie ahead!
