Church News
The day after pancake day or Shrove Tuesday is Ash Wednesday and marks the start of Lent and we often hear of people giving things up in Lent.
But the giving up of things seems to have been particularly popular this year long before Lent. We have had dry January, laying off alcohol; and also ‘veganuary’ where record numbers signed up for a plant-based diet, giving up meat and dairy. In February the heart foundation encouraged us to cut chocolate out and ‘dechox’; yet others told us to be ‘fi zz free’ in February and give up all sugary drinks.
Perhaps all this encouragement to give things up even before we get to Lent, serves to help us focus on the true meaning of Lent. The main purpose of Lent is to pay attention to our inner lives, our spiritual life. Sometimes it can help to get rid of the outward or material things that distract us from attending to the inner life and hence the tradition of fasting. Perhaps busyness is one thing that can most distract us. Space to even think and refl ect can so easily be fi lled with the 101 things we have to do in life; often good things, necessary things, fun things, but can all too easily crowd out completely any time to be still and refl ect.
Lent – the time from pancake day through to Easter Day is a great time to experiment with prayer. If you never or rarely pray, why not try it each day in Lent even if just for a few moments and see what happens!
If you already pray occasionally, perhaps you
could try praying more regularly or in a different place or in a different way. The Church of England is offering to email or text us a daily refl ection and prayer each day during Lent to help us to stop, pray and refl ect. To sign up just go to:

Of course the fun can still go on in Lent and St Nicholas will be holding a FUN FAMILY FILM NIGHT – INCREDIBLES 2, on Friday 22nd March. The box offi ce opens at 5.45pm for refreshments and the reserving of seats. The fi lm starts at 6.15pm and is free of charge – all are very welcome.
