County Councillor Update Dear Residents,
Today I was with the Virtual School; I am a Governor and we had one of our regular Governors meetings. Many of you may not even know that Dorset has a Virtual School, and no, it is not called Hogwarts!
The Virtual School looks after all the Looked After Children of Dorset and oversees their education, we have a wonderful Headteacher, though the children say this is too scary a title for such a kind approachable man as David, and we have a small staff, who are equally approachable and understanding. Two thirds of our children are at various schools in Dorset and some are at school out of the county, usually just over the border in Poole and Bournemouth, Somerset, Devon, Wiltshire, a very few are at school further away. Our lovely Head, David, knows all his 320 children, even though he doesn’t see them at assembly every morning. The children are placed in 192 different educational settings, so in addition to knowing the names, aspirations and achievements of 320 children, the Head has to deal with 192 Headteachers and 192 designated teachers within the schools. What a job! One he does with patience and understanding.
Once a year we hold the Looked after Children’s Awards ceremony, a wonderful occasion when as many of the children, their carers and teachers all get together to celebrate the many achievements of all our children and have a thumping good time into the bargain! We always have lots to celebrate, especially among the younger ones who work very hard at school often having to deal with changes in their lives. Currently we have over 60 in the Sixth Form, most of whom will proudly go on to University or FE Colleges.
In Corfe Mullen, Win on Waste in the Library is doing really well, 50 households brought us their sorted items in February. Please, it is very important that you bring us clean waste, sorted into the separate categories, and please don’t leave it outside the Library door, it is not the job of our lovely Library staff to deal with it. The next collection is on 9th March.
With kind regards Susan Jefferies
