Chernobyl Children’s Charity Seeks Volunteers particularly suitable as a place where these children

The Wessex Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline charity is recruiting volunteers to help host children aged ten and eleven who will be visiting Poole for four weeks in July this year.

Wessex CCLL is the local branch of the national charity and is based in Broadstone. It brings youngsters out of Belarus and northern Ukraine, where toxic pollution continues to cause health problems following the nuclear accident that took place 33 years ago. The toxins, which were washed into the ground by the rain, affect a huge swathe of the region and research has shown that there are health benefits to children after a prolonged stay in a clean environment. Our area, with its sea air, great beaches and lots of outdoor activities, is

usually active and responsive like most children are. In fact, they could be local youngsters, were they not Russian speaking.” Does the language barrier create any problems? John doesn’t think so. “It has never been an issue. The children are brought here by teachers who are fluent in English, but it is not difficult to communicate by showing, pointing or even drawing pictures.”

While the children are here, a full program of activities is planned so that they are together and occupied during the working day. This can include visits to Brownsea Island, Weymouth Sealife Centre or a beach day. The children also have their eyes tested and are taken for a dental inspection. Many of the families have little money and dental treatment or prescription glasses may not be affordable at home.

If you are interested in finding out more about hosting, the charity would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact John or Carolyn on 01202 690110 or visit: www.CCLLwessex.org.uk
