In 2018 our CSW team broke all records and by a quite a margin. Most encouragingly, the percentage of speeding vehicles has fallen yet again. We are making an important difference and that’s why we volunteer. Looking back at the year, we can see what helped us improve...
• We gained two new volunteers. This obviously enabled us to run many more sessions, but it also brought us additional skills and reduced the amount of time each of us had to give up for Speed Watching duties. For many sessions, we have more than four volunteers available – so the people who are available for the most sessions can be left on the subs bench for those.
• As a team we improve with practice and we have now been practicing for four years. In that time we have learned how to organise ourselves more effectively. We’ve found that having teams of four improves our accuracy and allows us to continue even if someone drops out at short notice. In every session, team members have roles which make
the most of their abilities and experience. Some volunteers are make/model-literate, some people’s handwriting is more legible than others, some have very good eyesight.
• With experience we also improve individually. We get better at judging speeds by eye so we only use our radar device on vehicles that look as though they are speeding and we become better at recognising car makes from their badges. We now have a set of flipcards to practice with.
• We’re using additional equipment too. When we are passed by a speeding motorcycle we have to turn round and read the registration number as it speeds away from us. Some motorcycle number plates are quite small, so this was a real problem. We are now using binoculars and, in 2018, for the first time, we have been able to record motorcycles.
