It’s not surprising – so many of us lead sedentary lifestyles, working long hours hunched over a computer or sat behind the wheel of a vehicle, not getting enough rest or exercise. Certain jobs involve repetitive movements that can lead to overuse and strain injuries. Back pain can also be linked to stress, an unhealthy diet and/or obesity and poor sleeping habits.


For most of us, back pain will only last for days or weeks, but unfortunately this isn’t true for everyone. The automatic response is to take painkillers or anti infl ammatories to manage the symptoms, but sadly this sort of medication may not actually do anything but temporarily mask the problem. In fact, some medication may actually give you some stomach complaints.


Osteopathy can help to ease back pain by manipulating and strengthening the body’s musculoskeletal framework. Rather than simply treating the symptoms, osteopathy considers the entire body. An osteopath will observe and palpate muscles groups, examine joint movement, and look at your posture and the way your body moves to gauge the cause and extent of an injury.


This means that rather than simply treating the painful area, an osteopath may treat other areas that may be contributing to or affected by the injury.

Simple exercises: Simple stretches and exercises can help to alleviate lower back pain, including yoga, massage and Pilates. It is also important that you stay hydrated. In addition, it is recommended that you take steps to change your lifestyle and become more active. Even taking regularly mini-breaks from your desk to walk around the offi ce can make a difference.


Alleviating stiffness: If you suffer from a stiff back, you can use a foam roller to lengthen muscles, mobilise joints and restore fl exibility.


Education: Your osteopath will provide professional advice regarding lifestyle changes designed to improve your posture, as well as tips on safe lifting and bending techniques to avoid further injury.
