OurMPs ‘safein general election’

THE area’sMPs have little to fret about should the PrimeMinister call an early general election, ac- cording to newfigures. All four ConservativeWestmin-

ster members are set to cruise to victory by handsome margins, al- beit with slightly reduced majori- ties. There would be no surge for either the Labour Party or the Lib- eralDemocrats in this part ofKent, if the prediction website Electoral Calculus (EC) is correct. Chatham & Aylesford MP

Tracey Crouch, who recently quit her juniorministerial position in a row over fixed-odds betting, woulddrop4%of her vote share to 53%with an 85%chance of re-tak- ing the seat.Miss Crouch declined our requests for a comment. According toEC,Maidstone and

theWeald’s Helen Grant will also lose 4% (57%), but retains a 90% chance of staying in place. Ton- bridge and Malling MP Tom Tu- gendhat is inthe strongestposition, with 60% of the vote (-3%) and a 97%likelihood of re-election. EC provides seat-by-seat analy-

sis and drilldowns of opinion polling and trends, but it generally does not take into consideration very local factors. The figures take in data up until October 17, when national polling was showing the Tories nudging in front of Labour

and the LibDems flat-lining. In recent weeks, there has been

speculation that PM Theresa May will be forced to call a general elec- tion in the event of a Brexit “no deal”. But if the predictions are right, it would be a disastrous course of action, as it would leave her 26 seats adrift of the required number needed to form a govern- ment. MrsMay is currentlyproppedup

by the 10members of theNorthern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) at Westminster. It could be difficult for Labour to form a gov- ernment without going into a rain- bowcoalitionwith the SNP and the LibDems, the figures suggest. HelenWhately, theTorymember

forFavershamandMidKent, might see her vote share drop four points to 57%but she retains a 94%chance of taking the seat. Her constituency is earmarked to be scrapped under boundary changes, although there aremany atWestminster who feel the changeswill not be enacted. Crouch rejects EUdeal, page 29
