Libraries could face cut in opening hours

BOOKS at libraries including Larkfield, Snodland and West Malling lookset to remainbehind closed doors for longer – because Kent County Council needs to save cash. An overall reduction in public

opening times across the library es- tate is proposed in a review of services by KCC. Specialist services such as the

mobile library, home library deliv- ery, audio books by post, and resi- dential home services will be brought together under the brand of Library Direct, if the three-year strategy is agreed by councillors. Mike Hill, KCC’s cabinet mem-

ber for community and regulatory services, claimed all of Kent’s li- braries will continue to be main- tained. However, many couldhave their opening hours changed. He added: “We knowthat our li-

brary service is highly valued by the public, but it is not immune fromthe financial pressures on all

county council services. We have beenworking on a three-year strat- egy which is intended to protect the future of all our libraries and our archive and registration offers and, in fact, enhance some of these services.Being open at timeswhen libraries are not well used is not a good use of taxpayers’money.” Residents can comment on the

strategy for the county’s Libraries, Registration and Archives service during a 10-week public consulta- tion, which ends on January 31.

The strategy alsoproposes a new

approach to how the service pro- motes itself and continues to digi- tise its collections. The county council has pledged

there will be a chance for library users to shape the opening hours at their local library to suit their com- munities, if the changes are agreed. Copies of the draft strategy, de-

tails of drop-in events and the con- sultation
