MP submits quarry petition toCommons
APETITIONfeaturing thousands of names opposing a planned quarry at Ryarsh has been sub- mittedbyTonbridge andMalling MP, TomTugendhat (pictured). About 3,600 residents, dismayed
by the prospect of a large-scale quarrying operation in the village, have signed the petition. It requested that the House of
Commons urged Kent County Council (KCC) to reconsider the al- location of the site. On November 20, papers pub-
lished by KCC revealed that the draft Minerals and Waste Local Plan did not include the site at Ryarsh, but it has yet to be agreed by councillors, assessed by a gov- ernment inspector or adopted by KCC. Mr Tugendhat, who is the chair-
man of the influential Foreign Af- fairs select committee, said: “It’s almost unprecedented to have around 3,600 residents unite against a proposal which would
significantly affect the community. “ Itwas an honour to present the
petition on behalf of the commu- nity to theHouse of Commons.
“KCC’s Draft Minerals and
Waste Local Plan does not allocate the site at Ryarsh for quarrying, which I know will please all those who signed the petition. “It will now be for KCC to de-
cide aheadof a further consultation next month, and I hope they take into account the strongly held views of residents.” Gerry Boyle, vice chair of the
Ryarsh Protection Group, said: “This petition demonstrates the unanimous objection to the M8 quarry proposal. Parliament will urge KCC to reconsider, and we sincerely trust that our councillors are able to listen at this very im- portant time.” MaryMcKinlay, chair of Ryarsh
ParishCouncil said: “I’mdelighted with the way in which everyone has pulled together to get the peti- tion submitted.” Aspokesman forMr Tugendhat
said theMP had submitted the pe- tition to theHouse of Commons.
