THe first phase of the new play equipment in Halesworth Park was opened on May 29th 2016 after a fund raising campaign by GAPPA (Grand Parents and Parents Association) led by the late Jane Kircher, the driving force behind GAPPA. The group recently added a picnic bench, a commemorative tree and plaque in memory of Jane with the remaining funds. The ‘Jane Kircher Play Area’ has been used and enjoyed by children, parents and grandparents ever since it was opened and it has successfully managed to accomplish the original vision of Jane and the group when they set out to improve the facilities in the park. GAPPA have now completed
their task and would like to take this opportunity to thank all those businesses, individuals,
AUTUMn really is here and we have already had our first frost, although it has been followed by a couple of very warm and sunny days. Most gardeners are still suffering from a real lack of rain, but the odd rainy days have at least topped up the water butts!
Autumn can be quite a busy
time for repairing, planting and clearing up. If your lawn is looking a bit tired and worn out, early autumn is a great time to sow some seed in patches to bring the grass back to life. If your lawn is looking anything like mine you may be tempted to re turf, this obviously will bring an instant result but will require quite a lot of preparation to avoid the weeds coming back through your newly laid turf. If we can be of any help or you would like some advice, please call or email me. The borders and beds would probably benefit from a really good clear out and cut back, this will create a bed that is ready for the coming months, it will also show up areas that are bare and could benefit from new planting. This is the best time to plant bare rooted roses and shrubs, when planting please remember to improve the soil in the bottom of the hole before you plant. This gives the new plant the best

DIeD peacefully on September 8th 2018 whilst residing at Beech House, Residential Home, Beech Close, Halesworth, aged 89. Formerly living at her family home nearby in Halesworth for over 50 years. Cousin of Judith and Geoffrey
Dale and ‘Auntie’ to Jonathan, Fiona and Philip, Godmother to Cicely, Susan, Alison and Charles. well known in the area over the years, with many interests, in particular horticulture and the natural
charities, town council and other organisations that have generously contributed towards the cost of the play area, waveney norse for implementing all the facilities and equipment on the group’s behalf, the Community news for supporting this article and all the GAPPA members and volunteers for their hard work and dedication in organising the fund raising and turning a good
possible start and should ensure strong growth. Pruning roses now helps them
to weather winter well. Chop bush roses back by about a third and take out those stems that cross the centre. Also take off anything dead or diseased to cut down their wind resistance and make them less likely to get rocked about and incur winter damage. More thoughtful pruning can take place in spring. one of my favourite jobs at
this time of year is planting bulbs that will give colour in the spring. you can plant them throughout your flower borders or naturalise them in the lawn (if you have an area that can be left uncut during and after flowering. Bulbs suitable for naturalising include daffodils, crocus, snowdrops and cyclamen. If planting in lawns then choose early flowering bulbs. This will give the leaves time to die back naturally before it’s time to get the mower out. Remember all bulbs should be left to die back naturally for a minimum of six weeks, this will allow the bulbs to build up strength for next year. If you are planning to grow your bulbs in pots, choose a good multi purpose compost with a little grit to help drainage and layer the bulbs in
idea into reality. GAPPA hopes that the children
of Halesworth and surrounding villages and visitors to the town will be able to enjoy the play area for many years to come and that it may also give inspiration for future groups to show what can be accomplished if you have enough goodwill and determination.

the pot. This will help achieve a dense and flowery spring pot display, try layering them up one on top of another. The largest and latest flowering bulbs go in deepest, moving to the smallest and earliest in the top layer. The emerging shoots of the lower layer bulbs just bend round anything they hit sitting over their heads and keep on growing. The results are fuller pots that flower for longer. Sow sweet peas now in a cold
frame or outdoors protected from mice and slugs, and you will have big, strong plants and early flowers next year. Raking leaves is an inevitable
in the autumn, it can be a never- ending task, but the garden always looks better for it and if you bag the leaves it will make a great mulch for the beds in the spring. Just relax, enjoy the the start

A CoMPAny of members and friends travelled by Community Bus to east Bergholt, in Constable Country, to visit Pat Kemsley, a former member and now with the local branch. Some of their members joined us in the lovely garden for tea and a rendition of ‘If I were a rich man’ and ‘A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square’ ably sung by Pat’s grandson. we had a very nice afternoon and it was good to see where Pat has put down her roots! She was presented with a garden ornament and flowers in appreciation. we were delighted to welcome members from Halesworth Branch to our September meeting. Instead
