Halesworth & Southwold Community News October 2018 17 From the Alfred Corry Lifeboat Museum

I AM pleased to say that in spite of very mixed weather over the August Bank Holiday weekend our fund-raising efforts were very successful and donations, table top sales, and the tombola, produced the magnificent sum of £632, an increase of 20% on last years efforts. As we get ever nearer to starting our extension this was a most welcome addition to our funds. we are most grateful to all who made this possible by donating items for the sale and the tombola, and our ever-loyal workers and stewards who made sure the museum was looking its best and filled all the staffing gaps so that there were always staff on duty. we are indebted to the Town Crier who gave us lusty publicity, backed up by Fred Assman who distributed leaflets, also to Andy of The Green elastic Band who cycled more than 30 miles to entertain visitors. To all these kind people we say a very big thank you. The Town Crier may seem a quaint legacy of the past, but several visitors told us they had come to visit the museum because of the publicity he gave us with his big shout! As part of the Harvest

Festival celebrations Robert (Jim) Blythe, a fellow Trustee and steward, led the large congregation in prayers at the Blessing of the nets evening service in St edmunds Church. As you know the service alternates with the Alfred Corry Lifeboat Museum and we hope

on Monday 11th June 2018 something happened. our business which we had for over 20 years went up in smoke. we had decided to sell the business, and a letter was sent to inform our landlady of this on June 4th 2018. I (Annie) then went on holiday with my partner, and a week into our holiday we

our extension will be completed in time for us to host the service next year. 2018 is an important

year and marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which saw the guns fall silent at 11am on november 11th 1918. It is interesting to recall that before the introduction of Remembrance Sunday after ww2, november 11th, irrespective of the day of the week, was always scrupulously observed as Armistice Day: everyone stopped what they were doing and stood in silence for two minutes and in the early 1920s all trains, yes, including express trains, and all road vehicles, stopped! But 2018 also marks a centenary for the Museum for, in october 1908, with work on the new harbour being complete, it was decided to move the Alfred Corry to a new platform near the old chain ferry. A haul off warp was laid out to sea from the south pier. one unexpected benefit of the move arose from the fact that young crewmen outran the older members and, from now on, young blood formed a much higher proportion of the crew!

received a call from my business partner and daughter to tell us that our cafe was part of the fire that had started in the adjoining premises. The business that we were

going to sell was sadly no longer there. But we have had over 20 years of fun and laughter, mostly at the

The first service for the new station occurred on December 8th 1908 when the spritsail barge Maria of Rochester while running into the harbour in a moderate SSw gale, got into difficulties. The Alfred Corry was launched and took off the crew of two. This old photograph shows the old chain ferry and the Alfred Corry: the ferry was taken away in May 1940 and sunk as part of the anti-invasion precautions. now for some positive news:

our publication ‘The Short History of the Alfred Corry’ is now with Southwold Press and will be on sale at the Museum in time for Christmas, price £5, and our Christmas cards will be on sale this month. Finally, this edition will

appear in the shops on Friday 5th october so for the benefit of those who will read their copy that day, please note that our AGM will be held that evening, Friday 5th october at 6.30 pm for 7pm, at The Randolph Hotel: we hope cheese straws and other nibbles will be served!

come down and see the current state of the waterway and, in particular, the amount of silt that has built up at the Town Park end which has resulted in the drying out of the canal. our photo shows the group inspecting the silt bank from the towpath. The meeting was very constructive. At one time the Agency regularly de-silted the canal but this has now fallen into abeyance. Preservation of wildlife (particularly water voles), difficulties of access, and a policy shift on flood prevention have all meant that de-silting the new Reach is no longer a top priority. But there is good news. The Agency plan to reconsider clearance of the silt bank together with efforts to reduce the amount of silt run-off from farmland upstream. This could mean that water levels will be restored at the top of the canal. we very much welcome this new development and hope to see progress soon. Meanwhile, the Agency have

no objection to our strimming and maintaining the brickwork and base of Patrick Stead lock. we hope to do this work over the winter months which will mean that the historic lock will be cleaned up and visible. And before too long we hope to have water back in the lock itself. watch this space! If you would like to support

the work of the new Reach Restoration Group, please contact us at info.newreach@ gmail.com. Thank you.

The deadline for the NOVEMBER issue of the Community News is Wednesday 24th October.

The paper will be published on Friday 2nd November. Please send editorial to hcn@micropress.co.uk
