new legislation to deliver a
environment for
cleaner and healthier future
generations was introduced in Parliament recently by my departmental colleague, Michael Gove. The Agriculture Bill sets out how farmers will in future be paid for “public goods”, such as better air and water quality, improved soil health, higher animal welfare standards, public access to the countryside and measures to reduce flooding. This will replace the current eU subsidy system of Direct Payments, which is ineffective and pays farmers based on the total amount of land farmed. The current payments are skewed towards the largest landowners and are not linked to any specific public benefits with the top 10% of recipients receiving almost 50% of total payments and the bottom 20% receiving just 2%. In its place, a new environmental Land Management system will start from next year. Under our new system, farmers who provide the greatest environmental
benefits will secure the largest rewards. Importantly we will work together with farmers to design, develop and trail the new approach. There will also be a seven year transition period, in which payments will still be made, to enable farmers to invest in new technologies and methods that boost productivity - allowing for a smooth and gradual move away from the Common Agricultural Policy, laying the foundations for a Green Brexit. new figures published recently show that in the past year, the unemployment rate has remained at its lowest since 1975 and real wages grew for the fifth consecutive month. Since the Conservatives came to power the number of people in work has risen by over 3.3 million meaning more people have the security of a job and are able to provide for their family. we will continue to help more people into work by reforming welfare and delivering our modern Industrial Strategy to help create more, better paying jobs across the whole country.

SURPRISInGLy there have been two major items of news concerning refugees and immigrants reported on tv news programmes recently. on September 12th BBC world news reported on the way in which countries in europe such as Austria, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy and now Sweden were moving to the right, sparked by the news from Sweden that an extreme right-wing party, with its roots in the nazi party, recently gained 20% of the parliamentary seats! To me it is all too frighteningly reminiscent of the late 1930s and memories of the horrors of the Spanish Civil war. Then there was a graphic report from Lesvos where fighting between ethnic groups has become commonplace, as more and more refugees continue to arrive. The BBC reporter stated that the population of the notorious Moria Camp – a disused Greek Army Barracks meant to accommodate 2,000, which I have written about before, now houses 7,500 refugees and parts of the camp are divided by barbed wire into compounds housing different ethnic groups. And refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and elsewhere continue to arrive. Then there was a separate report on the numbers arriving
from Libya, and the hundreds being turned back, and the hundreds who have drowned! And, as I write, there are rescue ships, loaded with refugees rescued from the Mediterranean desperately seeking a friendly country where they can dock: Italy has refused to receive them! But, of course, none of this
sells newspapers and hardly a word appears in our daily press! Very few people realise that the countries sheltering the largest number of refugees are Turkey and Pakistan and, goodness knows, they have problems enough of their own. The refugee/ immigration problem is global and must be dealt with globally. But where is the leadership? As I have pointed out before, there are thousands of good people of all races and creeds who do care, but never even get a mention in the press: which brings me to Hope and Aid Direct. Plans are now being drawn up
for the next convoy and I hope to give more details in my next piece! At least we shall still be a member of the eU, but hanging over the charity like the Sword of Damocles, are the uncertainties of Brexit. But, in 2019 after Brexit, and with the growth of the extreme right, who knows? Margaret and Jack Storer – September 2018
HALESWORTH dementia CARERS’ FUND
AnoTHeR month has passed in a flash and the evenings are drawing in But our work continues whatever the weather and the season. we are currently helping 20
local families with respite care allowing a family carer a few hours break from their 24 hour caring role. It's not enough but it does help a little for these devoted people to carry on. Also, the person with dementia benefits from a trained healthcare worker spending some one to one time with them. we are constantly seeking funding with grants and awards and doing our own fundraising too, to enable this work to continue. we are committed to helping these families now and in the future. As reported last month, Jonny
our Dementia Support worker seconded from the Alzheimers Society moved on in September to a Dementia navigator role with Sue Ryder, covering the whole of waveney. we welcome Alice Sparksman to our team, from the Alzheimers Society who has a wealth of experience. Alice will work two days a week, on Tuesdays based at Cutlers Hill Surgery, she will be giving one to one support to those with dementia and their families at the surgery or in their own homes and supporting the monthly Carers Support Group at PSH too. For information and support contact Alice phone 07860 912458. we showed our latest film in September at the Cut. A great
film 'The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society' with an excellent cast. we had a very good attendance, one of our better ones, and welcomed more new faces. we hope everyone enjoyed the film and will come again on november 21st to see 'The Greatest Showman'. An excellent choice in the run-up to Christmas. As always we thank the Cut and their staff for their continued support. we can't do without it. Thanks as always to Jill who
makes beautiful hand-crafted greeting cards, giving us every penny towards our work. There is also a permanent display of Jill's cards for sale at The Triple Plea and we are grateful to Sue and Ian too for their enormous
support...thank you both, so much...and thanks to everyone who buys the cards and spreads our word with each one. A reminder that our next big
event is on Friday 19th october at Chinny's. This is our second live music gig with music from the 60s, 70s and 80s...and more, from ‘The Heights’ .Come and enjoy the music and dance from 7.30pm till late. Tickets £10 in advance from Chinny's and Jim Fyfe, tel 01986 875641, or £12 at the door on the night. Thanking the
community for your continued support - the fill- a- jar is great way of donating your loose change to us. Phone Dave and Jackie on 01986 875444 for a jar or to replace a jar. every penny counts!
