ISSUE SPOTLIGHT: HEALTH & SAFETY ENSAFE’S NEW

SAFETY HEAD Going for pole position when it comes to compliance is newly appointed head of health and safety at Ensafe Consultants Allan Hopper, who possesses a passion for motorsport. Alongside his role at the Northamptonshire company Allan also works as a volunteer race marshal at Silverstone circuit. He said: “I look for innovative

ideas, and to try to engage with people within companies and work in partnership with businesses and individuals to come up with suitable practicable solutions to improve health and safety across organisations. “I’ve previously worked in the

telecommunications, construction, rail, heavy manufacturing and food industries with a vision and appetite to improve safety culture.” As part of his new role Allan is

looking forward to helping Ensafe achieve the latest ISO standards. “We’re in the process of

updating our systems to the ISO 45001 2018 and implementing ISO 14001 Environmental Standards to tie in with our existing ISO accreditations, with a view to making it an integrated management system.”

FREE ASBESTOS TRAINING

Acorn Analytical Services’ Ian Stone and Neil Munro have been on a crusade to educate professionals and share their knowledge about asbestos across the county and beyond. Over the past six months they have been providing

free one-hour asbestos CPD training to architects and building surveyors across Northamptonshire and the neighbouring counties. They have completed this in a bid to raise people’s

awareness of not only the dangers but also the legal implications surrounding asbestos. The one-hour course covers a range of topics from

the different products and uses of asbestos through to practical advice on how to ensure contractor and surveyor competence.

Director Ian Stone (pictured inset, top) said: “We

chose architects as an initial trial and it’s been amazing, we’ve been able to get in front of over 200 people to share our knowledge.” Fellow director Neil Munro (pictured inset, below)

added: “The uptake has really pleased us and the feedback we’ve received has been great. This is why we’ve decided to roll the free training out to other businesses as well.” Acorn are offering free one-hour training sessions

to all Northamptonshire Chamber members. They are happy to either present this at your offices or smaller firms can go to Acorn’s training facility.

IS YOUR FIRST AID TRAINER THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOU?

In 2013, the HSE ceased approving first aid training providers. It is now the responsibility of organisations to ensure the training they receive is sufficient and proportionate according to their own risk assessment. To help firms make the right

choice, FS First Aid Training Ltd has produced a checklist of things to consider when choosing a provider. Firms should find out if the

trainer has an appropriate qualification, whether there is an organisational quality assurance scheme to monitor training delivery, whether the provider is able to produce accurate certificates and evaluate the course content. Director Felice Santoriello

‘EMPLOYERS MUST NOW

UNDERTAKE DUE DILIGENCE ON THEIR TRAINING PROVIDER’

said: “Training providers have to show an employer that they’re competent to deliver first aid training. “First aid training is available

from a range of providers who choose to offer regulated

qualifications, operate under

voluntary accredited schemes, operate independently

of any such accreditation schemes and are a Voluntary aid Society. “Employers must now undertake

due diligence on their training provider if their first aiders undertake first aid qualifications

that aren’t regulated by Ofqual or SQA. Due diligence is ‘reasonable investigation’ and the HSE has produced a guide covering how these ongoing checks should be undertaken and the documentation needed.”

Felice Santoriello A SAFER WAY

TO EVACUATE In the wake of recent fire-related tragedies, the management of emergency evacuations from buildings has been brought to the top everyone’s agenda. With this in mind, a Northampton-based evacuation equipment specialist has added a solution for managing evacuations from large buildings and across multiple-building sites. TagEvac provides users with a

fast, simple and safe method for checking all areas of a building are clear following evacuation. Every area in the building is

divided into evacuation zones and a ‘TAG Station’ is placed outside each area. Each zone is visually checked by an appointed fire warden using the ‘Sweep’ method. When clear, a TAG is taken from

the zone’s designated ‘TAG Station’, confirming the zone has been checked. Steve Clark of Spectrum Healthcare said: “It’s clear messaging and colour coding of zones, means whether you’re inside or outside the building you have a reliable overview of the situation. Most importantly, TagEvac provides emergency personnel with clear progress information.”
