ISSUE SPOTLIGHT: CONSTRUCTION & DEVELOPMENT MBA NAMED AWARD FINALISTS

‘IT WAS GOOD

An award-winning chartered architects practice has been named as a finalist at this year’s London Construction Awards. The team at mba has beaten off tough competition

from many established practices to make it through to the final round in the Regeneration Project of the Year category for their work on creating a contemporary apartment building in Watford called Ye Corner. Their scheme will transform a dilapidated brownfield site,

TO SEE A MORE CREATIVE

APPROACH TO DESIGN ON A DIFFICULT SITE’

currently occupied by a variety of car workshops, into a contemporary brick detailed building of 12 two-bedroom apartments and three one- bedroom apartments alongside a comprehensive landscaping scheme. Chris George, architectural director at mba, said: “The planning consent

was a great team effort between ourselves, the client and other consultants and one that we are all proud of achieving. It is going to be a great catalyst

for the company and hopefully leads to many similar opportunities for exciting contemporary schemes for the team. The council’s design officer commented that it was good to see a more creative approach to design on

a difficult site. “Having originally considered that the site may house, nine one bed flats, mba’s client was delighted with the uplift to 15 two and one bedroom contemporary apartments, housed within two charming buildings.

“At a ‘whole community’ level, our team feels privileged to have been

given the opportunity by the insightful owners to create a regenerative design of the site and therefore play a part in ‘Planning for a better Watford’.” The London Construction Awards final will be held on 23 October 2018.
