Salisbury and District Table Tennis Satellite Club is a big hit

West Wilts Dance festival

Historically Table Tennis has been successful in Salisbury producing a number of county and national level players, but often there is a huge gap in standard between those playing in competitive leagues and those playing socially. Reasons identified were the lack of opportunities for players both young and old to learn to play and improve. The high standard in some clubs also made it more intimidating for new players to get involved in playing.

WASP saw an opportunity to help overcome this barrier.WASP found eight volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds interested in being part of a new club. Not all were players but they attended the UKCC Level 1 Course in Coaching Table Tennis and took part in Emergency First Aid and Safeguarding and Protecting Children Courses that WASP provide.

The Salisbury and District Table Tennis Club was launched in November 2015. Through the Sport England Satellite Club programme coordinated by WASP the club were able to purchase new tables to add to the school ones (12 in total) and equipment for use at the school by the club and its students. The initial 6 week period was free of charge and attracted 150 people of all ages. Even the worry

Often the word ‘Legacy’ is over used and used out of context. However, it describes the 2016 Dance Festival perfectly. The extra third night accommodated even more dancers and an audience of 2,000 in total. The standard of performances, choreography and costumes seems to be even better. Not only does the Dance Festival provide a platform of performance for dancers, it provides opportunities of leadership, volunteering and public speaking for young leaders…..Legacy.

about numbers reducing once they started charging for the sessions were unfounded, instead they have increased.

Emma Sheppard (Coach) said “It’s amazing what’s been achieved in such a short space of time. Table Tennis England says it’s already one of, if not the largest clubs in the county. The invaluable advice and support given by WASP has meant we are in a position where the club can cover costs and reinvest in the club in the future.”

Luke Woodward (14yrs) said “It’s really fun and relaxed. It’s great that we have the opportunity to have coaching and play against players stronger than us. But if we don’t want to be coached one night we can just play games.”

West Wilts Quad Kids Competition 23 May 2016

Massive congratulations for Fitzmaurice who won the West Wilts Quad Kids. 22 teams took part in the competition which took place at Bath University. They won the event by over 150 points and also had the highest scoring boy and girl within the team. In second

place were Westbury Leigh and third was St John’s Catholic School.

The event has taken 11 years to get to where it stands now. Originating from its humble beginnings at the Bradford on Avon Music Centre. I was delighted that Chris Bell the former PDM of the West Wilts School Partnership attended the Thursday rehearsals at the Forum. Chris started the festival 2004. At the time I don’t think Chris would have had any idea to the extent of how the Festival has developed ....Legacy!!
