Good Practice – ‘Impact of the Primary Sports Premium Grant’

Horningsham School is a small rural school with 76 pupils on the roll. The school achieved a ‘Good’ OFSTED rating in 2011. The school has been clear in what it recognised and deemed to be areas of need and improvement. It has specific aims and objectives in mind. These include an ambition to achieve Gold in the School Games Kite Mark, compete in more sports events and tournaments, whilst improving on previous results and promote healthy, active lifestyles. They wanted to encourage more children to participate in events. In addition, they wanted to inspire children to develop their fundamental skills and integral to this had a desire to engage with families to promote this improvement.

How partners are supporting the school/cluster of schools to embed and sustain the activity - The CSP (Wiltshire and Swindon Sport), YST and Create Development have all worked closely with the school, to assist with the delivery of the school’s plan, and to aid its successful realisation. All partners liaise with the school with regard to their specific offers of support, with the CSP being the link to this collaborative approach. . The CSP has regular meetings and dialogue with both the YST and Create re the successful delivery of the SPG, and shares examples of ‘good practice’ from within the schools. The school finds this pathway and method to be very effective in the achievement of their desired aims and objectives.

Actions - The target audience was the whole school with an additional emphasis on the school community and family engagement .The Head and PE Leader (of the school) have played a fundamental role in the delivery and planning of how the SPG should be used. This has been achieved

through various means, including regular dialogue with school staff and the Y6 Sports Ambassadors, as well as periodically meeting with the CSP, YST and Create Development. A questionnaire was distributed to all pupils and staff in early 2015 with the results, alongside the School Sports Council, helping to formulate the SPG plan for 2015/2016. This exercise is currently being repeated. The school is also a member of a local schools collaborative that shares best practice and gives advice on a regular basis as well as running a full calendar of Sports Festival and Tournaments. The CSP, YST and Create have offered advice to the collaborative in person, with the CSP regularly mailing a bi-monthly newsletter to the partner schools.

Impact - The school has successfully achieved the YST Quality Mark, a nationally recognised award for achievement in PE and school sport. The School Games ‘Silver’ award was gained in 2015 with a hope of achieving the ‘Gold’ award in 2016. Termly inter-house tournaments have had a huge impact on school sports; they have provided all children with the opportunity to take part in a competitive sport, both individually and as part of a team. The events also provided opportunities for both KS2 and KS1 children to take on leadership roles. The School Games Organising Crew and Sports Ambassadors have done a fantastic job over the past 2 years in raising the profile of school sports; they have organised and led playtime activities and run regular assemblies on upcoming international tournaments and events. Funding has allowed the school to provide further SEN and G&T opportunities in Physical Education. The school was successful in being invited to dance at the opening ceremony of the 2015 School Games

‘The SPG has meant we have been able to purchase quality sports equipment which will last a long time. We have been able, as a small school,

to send teams to more events by paying teaching assistants overtime; the children and

parents have seen the positive benefits of this. Even the purchase through the SPG of an inter-house trophy has increased participation in events, and raised the children’s aspirations of competitive sport.’

‘At Horningsham we have lots of different sports clubs, from football, to rounder’s, to street surfing. We want all of the children to be fit and healthy, so we like to try to get them involved in as

many games and activities as possible. This year we have had lots of extra coaching too and new resources for cycling and skipping. It is also fun to go to competitions and events because it’s a great way to

make new friends in the area.’ (Y6 Sports Ambassador)
