Welcome to the 6th Edition of the Relay Magazine

I would like to welcome you to the sixth edition of the Relay Magazine which is a chance for us to celebrate young athlete’s achievements and school sporting successes. We have the results from the Winter School Games Level 3 competitions as well as some of the Level 2 festivals that have taken place across the county since the last edition of the Relay. As Relay develops we are finding more and more schools sending in the success stories of their pupils, sporting events and activities they take part inside school and outside. We would love to hear from your school too!

In this edition we have also included an update on Primary Sports Premium along with an example of best practice. Sport England have recently launched their new strategy and we have highlighted the relevant exert from ‘Towards an Active Nation’ for you. . I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the Relay magazine.

Winter School Games Level 3 Competitions New Age Kurling Competition – 13 January 2016

This is a fully inclusive sport that can be played by people of all ages. Lavington School hosted the event and 29 teams from 11 schools from across the county taking part.

Schools participating; Avon Valley College, Stonehenge, Larkrise, St Johns, All Cannings, Devizes, Lavington, St Joseph’s, St Edmunds, Brimble Hill and Uplands.

The 12 young leaders from Lavington School were a great help not only scoring and monitoring the games but also helping and supporting individual athletes. Thank you also to Rob Paget

from Wiltshire Council for his time and support on the day.

We had both primary and secondary aged pupils. Two Primary schools came 2nd and 3rd proving that age isn’t always an advantage. There were some very high scoring games and the final result was very close – particularly between 3rd and 5th places. The winner was decided by the highest cumulative 4 scores over their games.

On a beautiful but freezing morning for the Primary Football Level 3 Competition which took place at Stanley Park, Chippenham, the County Finals were split into 3 Sections; Small Schools, Large Schools and Girls’ competitions.

Girls’ Competition The thermostat was finally showing a positive reading when the Girls’ Competition got underway before lunch. The matches were very exciting with teams often separated by a single goal. The semi-final between Shaw Ridge and Downton was decided on sudden death penalties. This was repeated in a close fought final with Shaw Ridge finally beating Minety 3- 2 on penalties.

Schools participating; Ramsbury, The Avenue, The Mead, Bemerton St John, Nursteed, Holy Cross, Redlands, Downton.

Shaw Ridge Minety

Minety School said “thank you to the organiser Alma Borthwick and WASP for

a fantastic day. Our girls really enjoyed the event and we look forward to seeing you again at Stanley Park in the not too distant future.”

Large Schools Competition Daylight was fading and the temperature dropping as the large schools competition began. After a hard fought competition St Marks and Aloeric joined Malmesbury and Lawn in the semi-finals.

Schools Participating; Durrington Juniors, Bishops Cannings, Westbury Leigh, Aloeric, St Marks, Downton, Redlands, Westrop

Results Winners 2nd

Malmesbury Lawn

Bishops Canning’s school commented “what a great festival, even though

our team didn’t win, the children all enjoyed themselves.”

As in previous years the matches were ably officiated by young leaders from Abbeyfield School who, despite challenging conditions, performed their roles professionally and with good humour. The event would not take place without the County Schools FA and Wiltshire FA who help WASP deliver the tournament.
