Avon Valley School Sport Partnership

Sport at Hardenhuish School

Having been County Champions in the Badminton section of the School Games for the last three years Hardenhuish School’s Key Stage 3 Girls have now excelled themselves.

Sport Relief Day Change4life

Schools from Salisbury and Avon Valley SSP attended a Change4Life course at Avon Valley College. The teachers spent time finding out what a Change4Life club looks like and how to set one up. While the pupils from the following school; St Andrews, Winterslow, St Osmunds, Greentrees, Oare, St Katharines, Zouch, Wellington and Great Bedwyn took part in learning how to become a sports leader. First they took part in some team building games. We looked at the qualities needed to be a good leader. They then focussed on how to organise a session, how to communicate and how to change the game using the STEP process. Year 10 students from Avon Valley College who are studying Sports Leaders helped the pupils to prepare to teach an activity. So by the end of the course the pupils were teaching the Teachers. Hopefully the Teachers and pupils are now inspired to set up their clubs at School.

Primary Kurling Competitions

The SEND Primary Kurling competition took place at Durrington Junior School. 13 teams took part from all the year groups. The students were put into pairs and competed against a different pair in two rounds. For each round the total points were calculated depending on where they landed on the target. Both scores were added together. We saw some great shots landing in the middle of the centre circle and firing shots to clear the target. Congratulations to Oscar and Noah who achieved the highest score of the event. The 6 Sports Leaders from Avon Valley College; Josh, Callum, Kieran, Jordan, Tom and Saga did a fantastic job officiating and proving encouragement and tactical play.

Sports Relief at Avon Valley College

The students at Avon Valley College all paid £1 to wear sportswear for the day. The day started with the whole of Durrington Infant school, there were split into two groups. The first group started their walk of the mile while the

others took apart in different activity stations - space hoppers, football, stepping stones and sack races, ladder and hurdles and Frisbee throwing. They then swapped over. Year 7 students from AVC helped with the activity stations. This was all in partnership with Durrington Swimming pool as they were attempting to walk, run or swim the distance of John O’Groats to Land’s End.

At lunchtime the teachers at Avon Valley College created two mixed Netball teams who took the year 11 and year 10 teams, it was fair to say the teachers came out on top. Thanks to Zoe Thompson from Stirling Netball club and Miss Rideout PE teacher for umpiring the matches.

After lunch the whole school took part in the mile, it started with those students who wished to run the mile competitively. Everyone had a great time all completing the mile in their own unique way.

Jasmin Edwards from Avon Valley College in year 7 entered the British Schools Judo Championship in Sheffield on Sunday 3rd April. I am pleased to say she won silver in her weight category.

Media Training at Avon Valley College

24 students from Avon Valley College took part in a Sports Media training. The Media training took place in the Learning Resource Centre and was run by Mrs Harries. The students have learned many skills including how to take good notes and some shorthand. They also learned how to interview and write concise reports. The session spanned over 3 hours and there was a real life reporter Baz from Castledown Radio to show the students how things were done. The Students thought it was brilliant and are now confident enough to support Mrs Harries to write the School Games reports. Their work will hopefully appear in the newsletter, website and even make it on to Castledown radio,

On March 10th the team travelled to Plymouth to take part in the Regional Finals of the School Games to determine which school would be representing the South West of England in the National Finals in Milton Keynes.

The finals were divided into two pools each of four teams, Hardenhuish were in Pool A with Dorset, Devon and Avon. Each team containing county players ranked many places above them, so Hardenhuish were rank outsiders.

The first match was against Dorset who were probably the hot favourites, they were despatched with a 4 games to 1 win, then Dorset which was a harder trial with Hardenhuish winning 3 games to 2 and finally Avon who succumbed losing 4 games to 1, all very hard and some very close games but Hardenhuish’s dogged determination drove them on to victory after victory.

So on to the Final against Somerset who won Pool B and more highly ranked players, undeterred by the statistics the girls took up the challenge and were winning 4 games to nil when their opponents conceded the match making Hardenhuish girls the Champions of the South West!

Congratulations goes to; Emily McKenzie – year 9 singles (played 4 won 3) and doubles (played 4 won 3) Nirmala George – year 9 singles (played 4 won 4) and doubles (played 4 won 3) Rebecca Hatherly – year 9 doubles (played 8 won 6) Jessica Burnell – year 8 doubles (played 8 won 6)
