It is a programme that is led by Mrs Lane at Devizes School but very much supported by the entire PE department and the school. The programme provides specialist PE teachers from Devizes School to help primary schools increase their competence and confidence in teaching PE. It is now in its third year and the results have been outstanding. Our local primary schools are now offering high quality PE

lessons with the help of our teachers.

DSSN also provides schools with numerous curriculum festivals throughout the year and runs the level 2 school games in a number of sports. Look out for the DSSN logo and keep up to date with results and events in this bulletin!

Primary schools part of the DSSN programme include; Southbroom Infants, Southbroom St James, Nursteed, St Josephs, Urchfont, Five Lanes, All Cannings, Bishop Cannings and Five Lanes.

KS1 Gymnastics Festival In March, primary schools that are part of Devizes Schools Primary Sport Programme went to Devizes School for the KS1 Gymnastics Festival. To open the festival, the Devizes School Gymnastics Team performed a routine that certainly inspired the audience. After the display the schools rotated around 5 workshops including Travel, Balance, Jumping, Shapes and Rolls. Wiltshire School of Gym coaches and Lisa Low from Aspire Sports Coaching

came in to help run these workshops. Thanks to Lisa Low who leads the Gymnastics Club at Devizes School.

KS2 Dance Festival In February, primary schools came to Devizes School for the KS2 Dance Festival. This year the theme was Street Dance. A year 11 Dance Leadership group had been working for approx. 2 terms creating street themed dances to teach to the primary schools. The primary schools spent the afternoon learning the dances and putting their own ideas into the routines. At the end of the festival the schools came together to perform their dances to the rest of the schools. It was a fantastic show to watch! Well done to all of the schools who took part and to the year 11 dance leaders who worked tirelessly creating these eye catching moves!

KS1 Basketball Competition In February, 8 teams came to Devizes School for the competition. To prepare for this event, Mr Herring (PE Teacher, expert in Basketball) ran a CPD session for the primary school teachers of DSSN to help them with their knowledge of the rules and confidence in teaching Basketball. It was a fantastic competition. Miss Martin from Urchfont said “both my helpers said it was the best afternoon they had had in ages and the kids said it was the best day ever!” Miss Chant from Southbroom Infants said “A big thank-you for yesterday, the children are still buzzing today!”

The Trampolining team won therefore qualifying for the level 3 school Games at Marlborough in July.

Trampolining Team; Jessica Johnson, Maisie Giles, Ella Beale and Bethany Wallen.

KS2 Tag Rugby In March, Tag Rugby School Games competition took place at Devizes RFC. The event was organised by Matt Pearson (Sport Development Officer at Wiltshire Council) and supported by Andy Smith from Devizes RFC. A number of Devizes RFC players were there to help the young leaders with the event. A huge well done to Five Lanes Primary School who won. A total of 24 teams had entered. Thank you to all those involved with this competition. We even had a visit from 2 Bath Rugby players to award the medals and trophies.

Trampolining & Gymnastics

School Games In January, the Trampolining and Gymnastics Squads went to Wiltshire School of Gymnastics to compete in the School Games Level 2 Competition. Last year we qualified for the Level 3 event in these disciplines so the pressure was on to perform to a high standard! We took a total of 4 gymnastics teams and 2 Trampolining teams.

The Gymnastics teams were up against tough competition with the likes of Sheldon and Malmesbury who have strong Gymnastics teams.

Gymnasts; Robyn Tilley, Chelsey Ellis, Ellie Mullan, Amiee Cornish, Shannon Jones, Rebekah Waldron, Lucy White, Maddie Grace, Rosie Tannahill, Nathan Bradley, Ellie Thorpe, Lottie Howarth, Francesca Collin, Asha Huggins, Sophia Huggins, Emily Lawson, Jade Foster, Molly Baker, Sophie Walker. Some of our Gymnasts qualified for the level 3 school games event at Marlborough in July.

School Games Girls’ Rugby Rugby for girls is becoming more and more popular since the England Women’s Team won the World Cup in 2014. It has become a popular sport within school, our Touch team won the Level 2 school games competition last year, qualifying for the level 3 school games where they became runners up to Sheldon School.

Contact rugby has also been introduced to the year 9 girl’s curriculum, with a few of our girls competing for outside clubs we are keen to provide them with further opportunities to compete against other schools (both touch and contact games). The RFU recently organised a ‘Pitch up & play’ event on the 17th March at Devizes RFC. We took a total of 19 girls, some of which hadn’t played contact before. By the end of the evening, all of the girls had either played a full contact game (drawing 2 games against Sheldon and beating Lavington) or had started with touch rules and finished with basic contact rules. The girls learnt a lot and experienced their first competition game of Rugby.
