What a difference a term makes!

Many congratulations to Year 13 student Thomas who was presented with his gold Duke of Edinburgh Award by Prince Edward at Buckingham Palace in May. He is pictured with explorer Richard Harpham who gave an inspirational address.

Sunshine replaces snow as DofE students return to the New Forest

Their Silver practice expedition in the Spring Term was made memorable due to snow falls transforming the New Forest into a landscape reminiscing of Narnia. But a term later, the sun was blazing as Sibford students returned to the Hampshire beauty spot for their qualifying expedition. DofE coordinator Linda Phillips said: “The contrast between the two expeditions couldn’t have been more different. “In March, the students showed

considerable stamina when they woke up to find their tents covered in snow. Whereas in June the challenge was how to cope while carrying their packs in scorching hot weather!” Some 21 pupils took part in the qualifying expedition. All completed it with flying colours and are now finishing off the other sections of the award. Said Linda: “The groups

showed some excellent navigation and camping skills and carried out interesting projects on

different aspects of the New Forest. I hope many of them will now go on to do their Gold Award.” Meanwhile this term also saw

33 Year 9 students set out on their Duke of Edinburgh bronze assessment. After a day walking through

the countryside they all arrived at Horley campsite in good spirits ready to pitch their tents. Following a good night’s sleep they were all up early and packed away ready for another day of walking. The bronze pupils also enjoyed much better weather than they experienced on their practice, and all successfully completed their expedition.

Congratulations to Year 8 pupil Harry, who spent the early May bank holiday completing the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge Harry, who finished the task in 29.5 hours, took on the challenge to celebrate his 13th birthday and raise money for the National Eczema Society. He set off in very foggy

conditions, as can be seen from the top photograph, but conditions improved on each mountain with Harry completing the final climb and decent of Snowdon at 12:15pm on Saturday after successfully climbing Pen Y Fan and Cader Idris on Friday. In total he climbed over 2,500

meters and raised more than £900.
