Quaker heads converge on
Sibford On 17/18 June, we were visited by representatives of our sister Quaker schools ~ Ackworth, Bootham, Brekenbrough, Leighton Park, Lisburn, The Mount and Newtown ~ for the annual Quaker Heads’ and Deputies conference which, this year, was hosted here at Sibford. The conference included a talk
by John Levell, Joint Chair of Trustees at the British Dyslexia Association and also a parent of pupils in Years 8 and 10, who spoke on ‘Neurodiversity – from education to the workplace’.
Parents join in STEM fortnight
This term saw our Junior pupils spending two weeks focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. In addition to lessons run by our
teaching staff, we were particularly pleased to welcome parents working in STEM related industries who came along to tell us more about what they do. • Rai Wahlen gave a talk to Year 5 and 6 about his work with chemical analysis.
• Ken Moreau had Reception and Key Stage 1 floating around the playground as polymers before getting Year 4 to test solutions to a technical problem.
• Emma Hoeltzen told Key Stage 2 all about the crucial role science plays in pharmaceuticals.
• Mike Chanides gave a presentation about the engineering involved in the design of cars … using a series of props that had the children really intrigued.
• Tim Robertson showed us how science can be involved in the
4
three different jobs he’s done … working with dynamite, hot air balloons and as a park ranger!
• Steve Boreham gave a presentation exploring the science and technology behind software.
• Michelle Holdsworth talked to Key Stage 2 about her experiences of working in the automotive engineering industry and the challenges posed both by being a woman in a male dominated field and overcoming the challenges of dyslexia.
• Katy Downes ran a workshop activity for Year 5 and 6 looking at railways and overcoming problems connected with them.
Junior School Head Edward Rossiter said: “I would like to give a huge thank you to all the parents who joined us over the fortnight – the children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and it has really helped bring our STEM focus to life.”
