James picks up top tips from Ackley Bridge studio
Over May half term, Sixth Form student James travelled to Halifax to sit in on an edit of the Channel 4 drama series, Ackley Bridge. The visit was organised by Head
of Drama, Neil Madden, whose wife, Jo Joyner, stars in the drama. Neil said: “James had produced
a World Book Day video of Roald Dahl’s Filthy Beasts. He did a fantastic job, creating his own original sound scapes and interweaving these in around voice overs. “I was chatting with Librarian,
Francis King, when we hit on the idea of trying to find James some work experience in this medium. I managed to pull a few strings at Ackley Bridge and arranged for him to spend a day working behind the
scenes with editor David L’Anson and director Penny Woolcock. “I think it is important to make links with industries as it helps to open student’s eyes to the various different jobs that are out there.” James said: “It was a very
enjoyable experience and gave me great insight into professional media production. “Watching how fast David worked
through the footage, and seeing the decisions behind how he cut it together, was truly inspirational.
He explained in detail the process that goes into producing a show ... from the actors filming on set, to the images being distributed for CGI work, sound re-construction and image grading, and how it’s all re-assembled at the end to form the final product.”
Junior pupils enjoy residential visits
Year 5 and 6 were blessed with gorgeous weather when they visited the Malverns in May for Actvities Week. They were able to ‘live adventurously’ and undertake all sorts of activities including, canoeing, orienteering, high ropes, bush-craft, zip-wires, problem-solving and the king swing.
All the children returned from the trip having achieved their National Outdoor Learning Award. Year 4 meanwhile were also out and about in May
enjoying a one night residential trip to Bath where they were able to reinforce their History topic on the invaders to Britain. As well as visiting the famous Roman baths they also had the opportunity to call in at Chedworth Roman Villa and the Corinium Museum in Cirencester.
