Now, people are more comfortable about not only having these treatments, but also talking openly about it. In fact, I predict that having a non-surgical procedure will soon be as routine and commonplace as having a manicure or visiting the salon to cover- up grey roots.
The market for facial aesthetics is growing and hugely profi table. It’s a service many of the patients you already serve are accessing elsewhere. But do they need to? What if they could access facial aesthetic treatments at their local pharmacy instead?
There are two main routes for pharmacists who want to increase their profi tability through facial aesthetics.

by opening up and renting your consultation room to a clinician. It’s not an unusual arrangement, as a pharmacist myself for more than 28 years I’ve rented out space to chiropodists, hypnotherapists and massage therapists to broaden my services and increase customer footfall.
And the second is through training; by becoming a facial aesthetics clinician yourself and diversifying your pharmacy through facial aesthetic treatments and cosmeceuticals.
Before we explore these routes further, it’s important pharmacists know the most popular facial aesthetics treatments.
FACIAL AESTHETICS: THE TREATMENTS IN BRIEF
Toxins (Botulinum toxins, such as the brand, Botox tm)
An injectable treatment
Botox tm was fi rst used in the 1960s to correct crossed eyes and rapid
blinking by binding to Acetylcholine sites to produce a neuromuscular block. By chance, after injection, it was found crow’s feet – the lines around the eyes typically developed as the skin ages - had disappeared.
Fast forward to 2016 and Botox generated almost 2.8billion US dollars in revenue worldwide as an anti-aging treatment.
Administered to the top half of the face, toxins help treat frown lines, crow’s feet, fi ne lines, wrinkles, sagging and can be used in facial remodelling.
The effects last between three to six months and there are very few interactions and contraindications.
Fillers (brands include Restylane tm and Juvederm tm)
An injectable treatment
Dermal fi llers are composed mainly from the compound hyaluronic acid, which is a natural skin component that helps provide tone, elasticity, hydration
and healing. Levels of hyaluronic acid deplete with age, typically a quarter of the skin’s hyaluronic acid is left by the mid 60s.
Treatments include lip enhancement, smoothing lines and wrinkles, facial contour modelling, scar depletion and skin therapy for rejuvenation.
Treatments can last from three months to two years. There are few contraindications and interactions.

An injectable treatment
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy involves injecting the patient’s own platelets and fi brin for the cosmetic treatment of wrinkles or scars on the face, hands and neck.
Dermaroller is commonly known as skin roller, skin needling, microneedling and collagen induction therapy.
