Deans Pharmacy, Wishaw celebrate with Ian Strachan, Chairman, National Pharmacy Association

DEANS PHARMACY, WISHAW

The team at Deans Pharmacy in Wishaw is totally committed to delivering services that are tailored to the individual, not a generic service that fails to take into account each patient’s needs.

Aware of the high prevalence of smoking among young people in the local area, the team decided to focus on promoting its smoking cessation service among this demographic. Lanarkshire has some of the highest deprivation rates in Scotland and smoking levels in the area are far in excess of the national average. Smoking rates among the young are a particular problem.

To tackle this issue, the team decided to work closely with a number of community groups in the local area and began by forming a partnership with Coltness High School, focusing in particular on a number of students who were regular smokers.

The team held weekly sessions at Coltness High School with pupils, encouraging pupils to drop in to the pharmacy at any time and also made support phone calls between sessions to give students extra encouragement.

Of an initial 40 students, who registered for the service, 32 made

it to the end of the twelve weeks and were completely smoke free. The headmaster of the school commented that it was the ‘single biggest health improvement he had seen delivered through a school’ and that he was ‘astonished by the number of pupils that engaged and also managed to become smoke free’.

‘This gives the team a great ‘lift’ after all of the hard work that they’ve been doing all year. It’s been well worth the effort that we’ve all put in collaboratively.’ CHRIS JOHNSTONE, DEANS PHARMACY, WISHAW

‘There can’t be any sustainable solution to the problems in the NHS without an increased role for pharmacy, and the work being done by Chris and the team shows the vital role that community pharmacy can play.’

IAN STRACHAN, CHAIRMAN, NATIONAL PHARMACY ASSOCIATION
