COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICE INITIATIVE

Lauren Clarke, Davidsons Chemists, Forfar celebrates with Rebecca Cabrejas, Generics Business Manager, Accord Healthcare

DAVIDSONS CHEMISTS, FORFAR, ANGUS

The World Health Organisation has set out its objective to eliminate Hepatitis C (HCV) as a public health concern by 2030.

In December 2016, Lauren Clarke and her team at Davidsons Chemist in Forfar were contacted by Andrew Radley, Consultant in Public Health Pharmacy for NHS Tayside, to ask if they would take part again in the next phase of development work for the HCV service: the SuperDOT-C study.

Lauren and her team carried out a dry blood spot test (DBST) for each of their relevant patients. This is one of the most time-consuming activities of the service, so Lauren suggested to Andrew that she utilise the online electronic patient record in the pharmacy (the clinical portal) to access blood tests results efficiently and minimise the potential for retesting people unnecessarily. With the patient’s consent, Lauren was able to access previous test results and prevent any

unnecessary work for the pharmacy team and the laboratory staff.

Every one of the pharmacy patients consented to Lauren checking for their blood results on clinical portal. Every patient was screened for HCV and, although many of them were already aware of their HCV infection status, some had not engaged with treatment. To date, everyone who commenced treatment in the pharmacy has completed their treatment and received their twelve- week post treatment viral response.

‘Community pharmacy is in a state of change, so Accord are delighted to be involved in any new initiatives that are going to drive community pharmacy forward.’

REBECCA CABREJAS, GENERICS BUSINESS MANAGER, ACCORD HEALTHCARE
