INDEPENDENT PRESCRIBER OF THE YEAR

supported by

Leanne Carey, Sally Arnison, Barnton Pharmacy & Travel Clinic alongisde Jame Slade, Key Account Manager, Clinigen

SALLY ARNISON AND LEANNE CAREY, BARNTON PHARMACY, EDINBURGH

Sally Arnison and Leanne Carey are both independent prescribers, who have been actively prescribing in local GP practices since 2005. They currently work as GP practice pharmacists one day a week tackling long-term conditions clinics, medicines reconciliation and polypharmacy in the practices in which they work. The rest of the working week is spent running their own community pharmacy in north- west Edinburgh.

Working in partnership with Cramond Medical Practice, the pharmacy has established an extended minor ailments service (locally called the ‘Pharmacy Surgery’) to offer more rapid access

to advice and treatment for a range of common clinical conditions whilst freeing up same-day appointments in the GP practice for more complex patients.

Patients can self refer to the pharmacy or are actively referred by the medical practice when they phone seeking a same-day GP appointment and it is ascertained to be for one of a range of common clinical conditions as agreed with the practice. After clinical assessment by the pharmacist, a patient may be treated under the minor ailment service, offered an OTC product to purchase, or prescribed a prescription-only medication according to the local

Lothian Joint Formulary. If a patient still needs to see a GP, they will be referred back to the practice and a same-day, afternoon appointment is offered, if required.

The pharmacy also offers a comprehensive travel service, which, in addition to all travel vaccines and anti-malarials, provides a range of travel-related products to help boost sales. The pharmacy offers the service six days a week, with both pharmacy owners trained in travel medicines. The service has already had great success in offering a bespoke service to schools whereby Leanne and Sally attend the school and give an information evening for parents to

help them navigate the complex area of travel health’ providing tailored advice on their child’s trip.

‘It’s a great feeling to be recognised in this way. Needless to say, we’re absolutely delighted and will be celebrating with our team!’ SALLY ARNISON & LEANNE CAREY, BARNTON PHARMACY & TRAVEL CLINIC

‘Events like this give the industry an opportunity to celebrate pharmacists and the contribution that they make.’

JAMES SLADE, KEY ACCOUNT MANAGER, CLINIGEN
